anybody else that uses this(skalinder, john r), you cats notice any power cutouts w/out duct taping everything together???

i noticed huge dropouts of power when i just moved my batt or something around, but since ive done the duct tape around all of the connections, its golden, i picked up my whole bookbag and put it on my back w/ headphones, no cutouts at all, just needed some sturdying, and a piece of duct tape over the cheezy rat shack plastic connectors;-)

any similar experiences???

If you're getting power drops from moving the battery or cable a bit, something's wrong.  Re-do your connections - they should be solid even if you're moving stuff around, duct tape or no.

theres nothing wrong w/ my crimping,i checked that, but the plastic extra leads do not connect to well, they just snap, and if they get moved around, they cut, which isnormal, but im getting shrink wrap in a bit,so that'll solve the problem for sure

This isn't normal, Bean.  I have 2 power cables + 3/4 RC batts all using those little white plastic connectors and they've never cut out on me even with vigorous movement.  Maybe I'm the exception, but I doubt it.

i only noticed it when i shook it around, which most likely is gonna be the conditions at mr smalls, it is just that theyre cheap-ass connectors, maybe its just that one batt, ill have to get another 1000mah and see,ill let ya know!!!

either way, like i said, it'll look nice and professional once i get some shrink wrap :)and it works great w/ just the duct tape even

theres not many ppl running these, so our experiences seem to be the only ones :-\

As long as you're comfortable with it, Bean (but I know I wouldn't be, too damn paranoid about that kinda thing!).  You could always hack of the cheapo plastic connectors and use XLRs.  Hmmmmm...now that's got me thinking...

john r, i took your pic advise and redid mine that-a-way!!! ;)

give those cables a rough shakin, i bet ya get audible dropouts, thats why i electrical taped mine finallly ;)

we need to get some xlr's going on or something, unless i got the ONE set of bad extra leads, but its their whole cable play, im tellin ya'll!!!

mine dont dropout now unless i pick up the cable while its plugged into the hosa, turn it upside down while holding the hosa cable up in the air, and also pulling the cable EVERY which way, and still it only cuts out very rarely, but its not the hosa's input dc plug, cause ive tried to stress/rattle that and to no avail, so its all in their crap ass plastic connectors, or the cables coming directly outta the batt!!!

i would cycle it a few times to ensure full runtime, and an occasional full cycle to clear any "memory" of the batt and you will be fine

dustin, thanks bro, so if i needed to charge in a pinch at a ferstie or on tour, id be alright, right???

im just gonna go buy a NI-MH batt and save this one for a backup 8)so i can top it off whenever need be

ok, i am only a day away from completion on this little battery project.  got the battery and connectors, but i got one question.  did you guy hack the other side of your wal-wart for a charger?  trying to think out the other end (i.e. the other bit of the re-chargeable battery).

all i need now is the actual hosa box.  thanks to you guys, i'll be ready to rock.
first run last night with the jb3, flawless.  so nice and it felt fairly sturdy, to boot.t

todd a little confused by your question.  i hacked the wall wort, but i hacked it for the hosa end.  i got an extra set of the radshack rc male/female connectors to complete the chain.  one half of the extra set is to go onto the cut wallwort cable, but the 1600 Ah battery will power the 312 for as long as i will ever need it to, so no hurry(for me)  you can see my pics on page one.

after thinking it through a bit, i have figured it out.  i was simply making it more confusing and not focusing on the rc connector.  makes much more sense now.

thanks.  i'll post my pictures when i get this modification wrapped up.

also, i just began testing the hosa + 1600 mah batt life

if i recall hearing john r correctly, i dont have to actually "run" my setup, just plug a batt into the hosa, no need to pass a signal, so i bet we can get about 36 hrs or so;-)

I think you'll probably get a more realistic number WITH input signal applied...

Rick

rick, IF i were to run a signal, would i need to run an output out of the hosa too, or just the aes input to get a more realistic idea!!!

im sure both would be ideal, and i might have to test it after galactic and particle so we get an idea how many hrs the jb3 will go/can hold of 48k data!!!

great numbers bean.  if you had the gear, you could go d5>312>cdrw700.  wait, i could do that.  but, i won't because i know i'll get two full recording days from the 1600, and i'm never really away from AC for more than two full days 8)

john, wasnt it you saying that i didnt need to apply signal to get about runtimes??

it was me, but as rick pointed out, there are other ways to get the runtime.  i offered a no load option.  rick offered a loaded option.  it may take more juice to transfer the signal.  but, is seems to me that since there are no moving parts, the hosa is just sitting there wanting to transfer signal, load or no.  as aways, i may be very wrong.

so, in the middle of this reply, i called hosa to find out.  got frank, he didn't know.  now, i will email frank, and he will forward to engineering to find out.  such geeks we are.

bean/jr -

i completed the hack and am trying to host pictures somewhere to show you guys.  nothing new, but it is 'another' person's hack.  I decided to stick with the crimp option and use of electrical tape.  it works well.  i wouldn't have even attempted this unless this thread had been started.   so thanks!!!!!

of course, once i completed the hack, joe w's laptop showed up at my door, so more fun things to play with.  jb3 and accesories is now on hold for a week or two.

ihave even newer pics actually, all the electrical tape was too heavy and causing even more dropuots, so i took john r's pix advice and slimmed it down nicely, and now i can bend that cable all around!!!

the rc leads cant be too stabilized, because the actual leads cant move w/ the other leads, if that makes any sense at all, what im saying is, they need their freedom, so i now just duct tape the 2 leads together to ensure a snug fit there and thats it

SUCESS!!! So, I got everything today and made mine! I really wasnt feeling the crimps, didnt really feel secure, so I hack them off and just soldered it. I gave the whole new rig (391 > dmic > hosa > jb3) the stereo tests and everything is working great! Thanks to everyone that helped on theis, especially Bean who practicly did everything but come over and do it!!! THANKS MAN! +T!

nice, the crimp method really is nice if ya get smaller crimps than what come on the rc extra leads!!!

but soldering would be just fine too!!! 8)

i just hope that grace does the optical upgrade soon, so no more converter box! 8)but i'll prolly be too broke to get it right away, so go hosa boxes! 8)and w/ out skalinder and john r's dedication and time on ME in the process, none of that info would have been available to help anyone else!!! ;)so thanks guyz!!!

yeah, josh, get the second battery for the jb3.  this will enable you to record the whole show, keep the thing in pause during intermission, listen on the way home and do the transfer before needing to recharge.

37.5 Hours!!
« Reply #64 on: March 30, 2004, 11:56:49 AM »
here's the response i got from hosa:

"If he wants to know the difference of current between with or without signal being applied/sent, the current should be about 10% up when signal is in existence against no signal."

and a field report:

got to suwannee on thursday and set up for dtb, went all day friday, and all day saturday(with every intention of recharging sat. night, i forgot), and all day sunday.  total hours on full charge, 37.5  so i'm pretty stoked on that.

the cable is a phoenix gold dtx.910.  the ra's are from skalinder's source, cables america(?)

i think some people were making a bulk purchase of ra adapters to keep shipping down.  look a little deeper in cables.
