Nick,
Have you looked over at audiokarma website?  That gear is all the rage over there.

Old parts are getting expensive
Good techs are retiring
I say that this is best for techies with well-stocked parts boxes

But by all means, if you have the ability, a vintage Macintosh can be choice !

Old Kenmore, Marantz, Sansui...., they are plentiful.  If a part dies, big deal.  get a new amp.

just research whatever the flagship line for each brand was, and start looking for them.  Craigslist (or searchtempest) is a great source.  search for "vintage" and "audiophile".  you'll get results

Recovering high-ender here too...

You can take it all the way back to the late 60s as well - I have a pair of Sylvania - yeah thats right Sylvania - floor speakers that are the most lush thing you've ever heard.
Powering those with a vintage Kenwood KA-6150 Integrated pre/power amp.

You need to scrutinize those old giant console rigs too - they can have some great stuff in them.
I pulled a nice Stormberg Carlson tube amp from one - dreamy for year, but I finally blew that one.

There's also some low powered Fisher gear thats is excellent.

I've got the KA-9200 integrated.  I freakin' love it.  My system hasn't sounded this good...well, since I had about $7k into it.  I paid $200 for this amp...and I like it as much, if not more than the big mono-blocks I used to have..and the tube preamp, and the fancy-schmancy DAC..etc
