Zoom iQ6 mic for iPhone
« on: September 02, 2014, 02:55:31 PM »
Zoom has expanded the use of its interchangeable mic modules to include the iPhone 5S.  The iQ6 mic is the same XY design as seen on the Zoom H6, but modified to fit the Lightning port of the iPhone. Coming this Fall, price at introduction $100 USD.

My speculation:
1. This should also work with the latest iPod model with Lightning port.
2. Zoom could adapt any of its other H6 mic modules to use the iPhone 5S, and new iPhone, scheduled to be announced next week.  This would include the Mid/Side mic, the short shotgun, and a pair of XLR or TRS inputs.

To support the mic, Zoom will offer an iPhone app called Handy Recorder.  The app allows you to choose PCM or AAC audio format, and offers a set of effects so you can mess with your recording.

The iQ6 mic probably will work with other iPhone sound recording apps, such as Garage Band.

Speculation no longer:  The iQ5 is the mid-side mic module, actually announced back in January 2014

Has anyone used either the iQ5, iQ6, or iQ7? I have a friend with an iPhone who asked about using one to record shows, but I had not heard anything about performance, good or bad. https://www.zoom-na.com/products/field-video-recording/field-recording/zoom-iq6-professional-stereo-microphone-ios

Seems similar but inferior to the Shure offering (though also cheaper).. Shure's has onboard software-based control instead of the wheel. Though the Zoom being able to physically adjust could be a plus for some.
