Shure introduces Motiv digital mics for iPhone, iPad
« on: January 05, 2015, 10:45:27 PM »
http://www.shure.com/americas/stories/motiv-digital-microphones

AT CES in Las Vegas, Shure just introduced four new mic products.  They are designed to work with any iPhone or iPad that has a Lightning connector.  The products include a mic plus analog to digital converter that outputs at 24/48.

The Motiv line starts with three products that work with the iPhone
MV88 iOS Digital Stereo Condenser Microphone (msrp $149)
MV51 Digital Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (msrp $199)
MVi Digital Audio Interface (XLR plug adapter for other pro mics) (msrp $99)

and a fourth freestanding mic that can adapt to the iPhone with a USB to Lightning cable
MV5 Digital Condenser Microphone (msrp $99)

update to say the Motiv products work with iPod.
I think Motiv gear will work with older iPhone/iPad/iPod if they are running the
latest iOS 8 software, plus a 30 pin to Lightning adapter.

This downloadable brochure provides a few tech specs.  For example, the XLR interface can provide 48V phantom power (no estimate of how long the iPhone battery will last).

Phantom Power    +48V USB/+12V iOS

I read that as providing P48 when powered via USB, P12 when powered via Lightning.

This has great potential, but alas the battery life on a iPhone will only allow limited recording time...

The battery life can be extended with the Mophie Juice Pack.
What I find more interesting is to know if it is already possible using regular mic's ( like church audio or core sound etc. ) with the i-Phone 5 or 6.
Is there anyone who knows more about this ?
I've looked all over but can't find any info at all.
But I have to say, I don’t mind it. I do object when I see people sticking microphones up my nose, in the front row. If I see anyone doing that [laughs] I’m going to have security remove them. Because that’s just obnoxious. But I don’t mind if people come and discreetly at the back make a recording of it. And I know that it’s just for their own use, for the superfan.

The iPhone headset jack only has a mono mic connection, so you'd want some sort of interface that allows for a stereo connection.

Does such an interface exists anyway? I have checked and some companies like Rode make stuff that combinates with the iphone. But I am not sure if their interface works with Church Audio mic's .
Has anyone here tried using an iphone anyway for live recording?

Shouldn't this post belong in "Microphones and Setup"?

To answer some questions:

The mic plugs into the lightning connector on the iPhone, as one could tell if they just looked at a picture of the mic. It's fully stereo, M/S. If you're too lazy to decode M/S yourself, you can pre-set the width of the stereo image.

The recorders we all use that provide P48 are much more horrendous battery hogs relative to the efficient and stable iPhone. If your iPhone has enough battery to last x number of hours, it still will if you're recording with it. Obviously it's wise to let the display turn off (doesn't affect recording) and to put it in airplane mode (recommended by Shure) when recording.

Here's my original thread about this, with samples. There's also a Blur complete show on DIME that I made with this mic. http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=174591.0
