Pre Amp battery power for CA 9200
« on: May 10, 2015, 05:06:21 PM »
With regards to the Church Audio 9200 pre amp: At what point do I need to change the 9v battery?  In other words, what is the lowest voltage that the pre amp will still work properly at?

Chris told me 7V a while back; but I personally tend to change them before they drop to 8V.

I'm using a rechargeable in an older CA9100 and charge it up before each show. Less trips to the battery recycling station :-)

Reminder to always measure battery voltage under load for an accurate reading.

Best time to measure is immediately after you are finished with a recording, before the battery has had time to 'recover'.

Thank you guys, I appreciate the feedback.  For safety, I planned to change it when it got to close to 8v, but now at least I know I don't have to sweat it.  Maybe I'll live on the edge and let it dip close to 7.5v  :o

If you change the battery at 8 volts you will be fine.

personally every few shows I just pop in a new 9V.  Not worth the risk IMO, for the cost.

^ This is typically my strategy. If you can afford a show you can afford batteries.

I do however use a meter that tests all types of batteries. It's a cheapo but seems to work. When new the batteries usually measure about 70% (not sure why). I use them for a few shows, check them, and then change if it dips below that "max" reading.

Yes between 7 and 8 volts. I have tested the preamp at 7 volts all the time. So it seems quite stable all the way down to 7 volts.
and 7 volts on a 9v is dead.

Thanks Chris...yours is the definitive answer on this topic :)
I think I've gone as low as 7.3V, but certainly never lower than that.  I seem to get a lot of use out of a single 9V alkaline, so I can't complain one bit.  I've also recommended these mics (CA-14c) to several people, a couple of which told me, after hearing my recordings with them, that they were going to pick up a pair.  I find them to be excellent stealth mics.

While we have you on the line, Chris, I was wondering if there's any point in investing in rechargeable 9V batteries? Specifically I'm looking at the Powerex and there is a 300Ah 8.4V and a 230Ah 9.6V. Would that 8.4V unit power a CA9100?

Edit: I bought the batteries and charger, this seems to have plenty of juice for several sets of music. I ran a time test and I think I was up to 3 hours on the 8.4V before shutting down to go out and record a show (on another battery). I bought the Powerex charger for AAs and AAAs as well and this is a nice unit, really gives you a better understanding of what kind of juice is really in your batteries. It told me to throw out more than half of the NiMHs that I had and re-conditioned the ones that were still good. You can set the charge and discharge rates for optimum run time.

eman, I run a typical 9V Alkaline between 20-25 hours easily, so your rechargables may not be all they're cracked up to be?

Yes get rechargeable batteries I have been using the EBL 600mah batteries and they are great they fully charge to 8.6v and with double the ampacity of a regular 9v 300 mAh You can get them cheap on ebay. Sorry for the super long time it took me to respond. I have not been spending much time in forums lately as my two business keep me hopping. Hope my response helps?

Yup. Thanks.
I was getting around 6 hours from alkalines, so maybe my CA is not all yours is cracked up to be? And when I said "before shutting down" I meant that I shut it down manually so still haven't completed testing. I ran for probably 6+ hours yesterday with the 8.4V Powermax.
