Anyone use "500 Series" rack gear?
« on: December 13, 2015, 07:54:55 AM »
I was poking around on Sweetwater and saw these for $249.00 ea. Nice feature set.

Looking further - I guess the "500 Series" is industry standard (API originated) - and other brands are making these vertical rack mount pieces - so you mix and match your own rig.

So - one of these...

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Cube500

Gives you 3 rack slots...all you need is a 500 series rack A/D. (can't seem to find any 2 channel units)

The dbx manual says 16VDC - but "The Cube" power supply pin out says 5V and 15V...I guess that's the trick if you want to use it in the field.

This format exploded over the last 10'years or so.  Was primarily API, but now virtually every major manufacturer of recording gear makes a 500 version in addition to or in place of rack gear.  I have a couple lunch boxes with some pres, EQs and compressor.  Nice, but you really need power access.  Designed to be movable, but not really field portable. Average price has come down some as well with the competition.  Can be kind of a black hole, like guitar pedals. ;D

I always thought of 500 series as studio gear.

I worked with a band once that had a lunchbox full of pres and a couple of nice compressors that they used exclusively for the drums and used it at every show. It was bussed down to stereo and sent to a stereo channel on the console.
Pretty unorthodox way of doing it but they had it pretty much down and their drum sound live was incredible. It was all API pres and EQs and I think a Lindell compressor. Sounded huge.

Most of it probably is used in the studio.  It is, however, quite movable, you just need a good power source.  If you have access to power at a club or hall, you cetainly could use a set of lunch box pres as a front end to your recorder.  If you were brave, you could add EQ and compression too, if you wanted.  Not very stealthable however!  I have a pair of API pres, API EQs and an API compressor in a lunch box.  Very rock and roll, but I have never taken them to a show. ;D

Definitely studio gear. Kinda overkill for AUD recording if you ask me... Steely Dan uses a lot of 500 series stuff iirc (all API) in their FOH racks
