Yet Another SX-M2/LS question...
« on: January 04, 2016, 01:19:44 PM »
I have a cabling question for a LemoSax that I just bought.

Obviously one knows that that it only allows for KCY or Lemo input.  The mic pairs that I run are the SKM-140/120 and the Schoeps CCM4, both of which terminate in XLR.  My Schoeps do have a second custom cable which breaks into two pieces via a 5-pin binder which I mistakenly thought was a KCY connector.

I'm not in a hurry to resolve this as I currently live in an area without a lot of live music but what I would like to do is figure out a solution to possibly make short Lemo or KCY pigtail that allows me to use the Sax.  Is that even possible?

Mics: Schoeps MK 5 MP, Schoeps MK 8 MP, Schoeps MK 41 MP, KCY 250/5 > PFA
Pre/A>D/P48: Sonosax SX/M2, Sonosax SX/M2-LS, E.A.A. PSP-2, Baby Nbox, Neumann BS48i-2 (for sale)
Recorders: Sound Devices Mixpre-6ii, Sony PCM-A10
Playback: Jolida 1501 Hybrid > McIntosh MX 130 > Von Schweikert VR-4 JR, or Little Dot MK III > Sennheiser HD700

You could certainly make a short cable to adapt from XLR to Lemo. You just need to know what signal is on what pins. Is the Lemo jack on a SX/M2 three conductors?

The only disadvantage is that Lemo connectors are a little spendy (not really when we are talking about the value of the connected mics), there is a about a million different kinds so sourcing the right one can take a minute and they are a pain to solder. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron but I might hire that one out.

I believe you can run the Neumann capsules with "active" cables that terminate into Lemo binders.
But I do not think that the CCM's can be used with a Lemosax.  Schoeps capsules > KCY would be route for that.

I could mistaken on that...  but that is my first thought on it.
Someone smarter will chime in I'm sure...

edit to add:..........  someone smarter chimed in quicker that my fingers can peck.    :P

^ This is correct you can run Neumann AK40/50 etc. > LC3 > Lemosax or Schoeps mk4/5/21/41 etc. > KCY > Lemosax

Get a regular sonosax for ccm. The whole point of the lemosax is to run it without bodies.
Recording:
Capsules: Schoeps mk41v (x2), mk22 (x2), mk3 (x2), mk21 & mk8
Cables: 2x nbob KCY, 1 pair nbob actives, GAKables 10' & 20' 6-channel snakes, Darktrain 2 & 4 channel KCY and mini xlr extensions:
Preamps:    Schoeps VMS 02iub, Naiant IPA, Sound Devices Mixpre6 I
Recorders: Sound Devices Mixpre6 I, Sony PCM m10

Home Playback: Mac Mini> Mytek Brooklyn+> McIntosh MC162> Eminent Tech LFT-16; Musical Fidelity xCan v2> Hifiman HE-4XX / Beyerdynamic DT880

Office Playback: iMac> Grace m903> AKG k701 / Hifiman HE-400

Conclusions:

If I want to run my SKM140/20 then buy some LC3 cables and NOT my current LC3KA.

If I want to run Schoeps use their MK modular system and a KCY cable.

There is not a way to make a short custom Lemo > XLR cable to run mics terminating in XLR.

Am I understanding correctly?

You are correct on all the above.

From the SXM2 manual -

"LEMO in L: Shield = Gnd, Pin 1 = +10V, 2 = +48V, 3 = signal in
LEMO in R: Shield = Gnd, Pin 1 = +10V, 2 = +48V, 3 = signal in
BINDER: Pin 1 = Gnd, 2 = L in, 3 = R in, 4 = +6.2V, 5= +48V

The SX-M2/LS can be used for all condenser or electret microphones having the
possibility of changing the capsules on the microphone body, such as: Colette
series of Schoeps, Blue Line of Sanken, or the similar line of Neumann.
It is important for these kind of microphones to use a good quality active cable.
When buying the cable from a microphone manufacturer, do inform them that the
amplification electronics often used in the cables is not required. "

If you are getting +48V on pin 2 that's what almost any mic that runs on phantom is looking for. I don't have an answer about the +10V on pin 1, probably the voltage for the FET in the cable.

Since the cicuitry for the microphone preamp (the body) is built in it's presenting the voltage that capsule/cable combination would be seeing after the mic body.

I guess I was just talking out my ass...not the first time. Sorry for presenting wrong info :(
