Depreciation and Advancement can both be a cruel mistresses...
"This is a common practice we have on the bus; debating facts that we could easily find through printed material. It's like, how far is it today? I think it's four hours, and someone else comes in at 11 hours, and well, then we'll... just... talk about it..." - Jeb Puryear

How did you fry it?

The AD2K in those old pics looks filthy.

Folks should keep in mind that many of these "battery packs" have voltage boosters and power regulators in them that may be *very* dirty. And even if they don't damage gear, they may negatively impact the performance.

The funny thing about this original post, I just emailed Benchmark to see what they still provided for benchtests/services.  Nothing was wrong with the unit.  I sent my V2 into Grace when I bought it and they did a few things to it.  So I thought since this is a little older I would have Benchmark look it sometime down the road.
I did not have a power supply for this when I received it.  I made a battery pack for it.  The battery sled had 2 black wires, one with white lines on it and terminated inside a closed plastic panel.  It was not the typical red and black...positive and negative.  So, I assumed the black with white was the negative, I guess I was wrong.  Plugged it in and smelt something burning. I opened up the top of the ad2k and saw a burnt spot between the fuse and xlr at the FB2.
So now I have to send it in tomorrow and hope Ray at Benchmark can fix it.

Wow! That's a real bummer. Good luck with the repairs.  :(

Do you own a multimeter? Battery pack projects, while seemingly simple, can easily have dangerous and unintended consequences and testing with a multimeter is the first step to making sure things don't go wrong.

Here is my mess up, with having reversed the positive and negative battery wires.  The manual says the fuse is supposed to protect this, but maybe not.

I bet it's still a fuse that burned Mark.  There are numerous intact fuses in that photo so it's possible the part that burned was also a fuse.  I'm betting they'll be able to fix it.

Don't let them wimp out on you and tell you they can't fix it because there may be burned traces on the board (that what Schoeps recently told me).  A decent repair shop will be able to jumper burned traces.  If they refuse to do any jumpering, insist on detailed schematics so you can send it to a real electronics repair shop.  The schematics will tell them where to run the jumper...it's not always easy to tell from looking at the board.

Sorry mark, this is too late for you now, but anyone that may read this, theres usually always a black wire and one or more non-black wires.  The rule of thumb is that black goes to the negative battery terminal.  Another rule of thumb is that the tip of a connector is usually positive (so non-black) and the barrel is usually negative (so connected to the black wire).

For Fixed 12v I think the best is the Battery Geek 10-14-115 $200 at 100wh
