most of the fat sound comes from the transformers in the signal path,in most tube based audio devices.

yes,there are tube mics which have that euphonic sound and there are also tube mics with less character.

I think the Schoeps tubes sound pretty nice. Darn cheap too 

If you like phish, there are plenty of recordings around with these. I think HankDank and SideshowBob still run these.

well, can't say i'm a phish fan. can't say i'm not.
but i would like to get a hear on how these sound. it's fairly easy to get a hear of any condesser mic, don't think i've ever heard anything w/ tubes before. and when i played bass, all i'd use was tube amps  but that's a different board.

also, most tube mics are very power hungry and require ac power, so not too easily used in the 'field'

audio technica has a phantom powered tube mic,the 3060.
it's cheap..check ebay.have not tried it.

Richard Campbell runs schoeps tubes, and I know he made his way into the phish section at least the few times I was there.

I have a couple of 222 sample discs that I can offer up.  The samples run the range on every variable:

section and FOB
small and big venues
indoors and outdoors
AD1000/V3/MMe/VMS
MK41, MK4, MK4V
mule, panic, phish, galactic, others

I was offered these when I was considering moving to the 222s.  The only reason that I didn't get them was because I decided to go to a smaller setup for now and I didn't want to haul the additional power supply boxes and batteries required for the tubes. 

If anyone is interested in hearing what the 222s can do with different caps in different settings, let me know and I'll B&P these CDs.
