What's a good iPod replacement?
« on: January 25, 2006, 10:18:34 AM »
So my 2 year old 3G iPod seems to have finally bit it. After the 1st year the battery stopped holding a charge so (since it was just out of warranty) for $100, Apple replaced it. Now, 1 year later, it just stopped working and started blinking a little file with an exclamation point.  I guess its telling me theres a file error? Anyone else seen this? I did the reset (hold menu and play at the same time for a few seconds till it resets) and it still blinked that file at me.  :angry3: POS. I haven't had a chance to plug it back in to my computer so I'm not sure if this is a permanent fatal error. But it looks like it may be time for a new MP3 player. I know there are many out there now, and I cant believe iPod is the best anymore. So I'm hoping for some suggestions...  Thanks!

try reformating the drive and reloading the software. It worked for me. YMMV.

i know it's in the past, but you can buy a battery for 30 bucks and just replace yourself.  you always could...

Yeah I realized that too late. Oh well. I'll try the reformat but I still am considering a new one just cuz this is a good excuse for a new toy  ;D  Why not?

get a psp

the storage and battery solutions are almost on the market, and when they are, the psp will do everything the ipod video can do, but with a better screen. it also is a fully functioning wireless web browser, digipic viewer, and oh - they have some bitchin' games, as well (steer clear of gta, and head straight for lumines)...

my wife gave me one for xmas. i thought i was gonna hate it, and i love the thing...

Whats a PSP? What brand?

edit: found it - playstation portable?  Looks cool but I just need music. I dont need games and video would be cool but as soon as the novelty wears off I'll ignore it. I guess i just want something kind of basic - if it could play FLAC files that'd be cool! (yeah right)
Creative seems to have some cool ones...

oh man. I dont know if a re-format will work. I just tried to turn it on again and you can hear and feel it grunting and scraping inside - really bad, loud noise. And if I shake it - somethings rattling inside!? I didn't drop it. No more file picture flashing, it was an apple - now the screen flickers and it just dies.  :'(  RIP. The little rio karma looks pretty cool but I'm drawn to the Creative Zen things.  But the Rio karma's are super cheap on ebay. I need something fast though - I can't be without music!

Thanks for the suggestions!

nope. no one else touches it. i've never dropped it.  i was on the bus happily listening to ween and it just stopped and flashed that file icon at me. and that was that. the noise just started now though. makes me want to take it apart and see whats going on in there.

My karma died 6mos after I got it.  It was a refurb.  YMMV.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.
