How do you transport caps and mic bodies?
« on: June 13, 2018, 05:43:05 PM »
This question is directed at those using full bodied SDCs, not actives or AT853/CA14 sized mics.

I used the box that came with my Avantone CK-1s and it worked nicely, especially as the width of the two placed side by side longwise fit perfectly into my backpack and it allowed me to easily pack the additional caps and shockmoints. I do anticipate moving to a dedicated gear bag and the boxes aren’t light. What’s your approach?

A lot of people use cigar caddies. Personally, I use a Pelican box with pick-n-pluck foam. My mics have quite small bodies, though, so I can use a rather small Pelican.

Have a cigar caddy, it doesn't do it for me.
We used to use a pistol case, but recently went with this poor man's Pelican (lol) an Auray (less than $20 at BnH)
here's a before and after the pick n pluck also showing the pistol case
music IS love

When you get confused, listen to the music play!

Is the Auray soft shell? Seems a bit precarious for capsules.

Can you say what about the cigar caddies doesn’t work well for you?

I could not find a cigar caddy I liked for my KM184-sized mics, so I went to a container store and got cheap clear plastic boxes with hinged lids and cheap snap latches, and added some brown paper padding from a recent parcel. Approx $3 each, they measure 3.25" x 4.5" x 1"

I travel with them inside a PortaBrace, so they won't come open, but these are certainly not rugged in any sense. I just need to protect the mics from each other so they don't get any (more) dings!

It's pretty sturdy when closed. sort of like those headphone cases for Bose headphones-soft but protective- the outside is a cordura like material.
I didn't like how tight the cigar caddy was around the caps. Plus, I didn't like the fit for our bodies with the knuckles attached. translation- our mics were too large for the cigar caddy I own.

I've used a memory foam lined fly tackle box for a dozen years. Had to super glue in some rubber window gasket to keep the mics separated but it works perfectly.

Whatever you end up using the most important thing is that you cover it in stickers and backstage passes...

Also used a Pelican case (I think the 1600) for my AKG 460s and multiple capsules. This would be a good solution for your Avantones that are roughly the same size. You can get off brand ones cheaper at the big chain outdoors stores.

I use a travel cigar case for my mics, which I love.  What I'd like, is a hard-shell case that I can line with a thin layer of dense foam to put my SD 744T in, and take up less bag space than wrapping it in a towel, as well one for my SD 302.  Sturdy plastic cases would be wonderful... Does anyone use such a thing that they can recommend?
Normal: Nakamichi CM-700's >> SD 744T (or) Sony PCM-M10
Normal: Crown CM-700's >> SD 302 >> SD 744T
Fun times: 3 Crown CM-700's >> SD 302 >> SD744T + 2 Nakamichi CM-700's >> SD744T
Stealth: CA-14c >> CA 9200 >> Edirol R-09HR
Ultra stealth: AudioReality >> AudioReality battery box >> Edirol R-09HR

Thanks for all the input. I’m going to check out the local military surplus store to see if they have anything useful. I’m thinking a cigar caddy for the mic bodies and then a hard shell case from the surplus store+replacement foam for the caps.

Some of the dedicated audio bags have built-in shell-like systems, foam, and rigid frames.  They are not cheap, though.  I am blocking on brands at the moment.  Maybe Orca?
