Run hypers or cards?
« on: July 18, 2006, 01:09:47 AM »
I'm hitting a relatively quiet show in a 2,000 seat theater soon. The only tickets I could get where a few rows back, DFC in the balcony. The venue is very boomy and apparently the balcony doesn't sound so great as a result of it. The DPAs won't be run, most likely. This leaves me with a pair of AT 831s. I was also considering tracking down a pair of 853 hypers to run.

Would I do best to stick with the cards or track down hypers. I know that any moment can set the hypers off but since I'm DFC and can stay relatively still I wonder if that is still going to be a problem.

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I find that it's not very hard to hold my head sufficiently still to run AT853 hypers in a hat.  I'd run hypers if you can get them.

I, personally, think it depends on the actual distance you are going to be from the music.  FWIW, and definitely YMMW I've run the AT omni's on my ears from the balcony in a theatre with results I could not believe.  Of course, there were only a few of us up on the balcony so it was pretty quiet up there.

In my opinion, only increase the directionality when it's absolutely necessary.  In other words, go with the cards  :) or hell, the DPA's

remember that the mics only reject sound from the rear and to the sides.  If some tool is yelling in front of you, it don't matter what pattern you are running.

this is what I live by as well... except I only have 4060s, so I dont' have a choice... but when I had the TLs, this is what I did.

Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

I always think shotguns and hypers tend to make the sound abit thin.

I agree, I like cards 95% of the time over hypers for the fuller sound.

Except when you 100% know it's gonna be boomy. Like this upcoming gig you're talking about.

in a boomy and echoey room the only cap to use is the hypers, trust me, I have blown three important recordings (consecutive shows) by running the cards which I though would produce a full sound only to later learn that they actully produced a full boom all three nights; sadly, the year before for a pair of shows in the same room I ran hypers from the exact same location and made pristine recordings

what's the opinion for the other side of the room? Ive noticed at least in my trials is that for onstage, hypers will pull it, but Ive noticed that straight cards pick it up better and fuller.

I am using garaj as an example. They were basically placed in the same stage lip spot, although they were at different venues, so its not a completely controlled exp. but its pretty good I think.

also the comp. is b/w mbho hypers aand josephson cards.
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

Also remember that the hypers have the rear lobe, so if some tool is yelling behind you are screwed as well  ;)
