v3/mini-me firewire mod's
« on: December 11, 2003, 12:59:31 PM »
so when these things came out we all kept hearing about how there would be a firewire mod for both units.  any idea on where that stands?  just wondering since both units were supposed to be modular in design.  at least, the mini-me was supposed to be that way.

i talked to mike grace about this a couple of months ago...he said it's on their horizon, but not a major priority...they had started work on it, but then backed off while other projects took priority...from the sound of it, it became a more difficult issue than originally thought...it may be worth an email to someone at grace to find out if they have done anything more.

As I have discovered with Metric Halo, this is NOT an easy challenge for a small company to tackle. Fortunately, Grace already has hardware products out there, unlike MH.

do Grace and Apogee realize how quickly these machines would sell(moreso than they do now) if they had Firewire?!
there would be NO problems running 24/96+

i believe they do...call mike grace, he'll talk to you about it...he specifically said that it was a lot more difficult than they originally expected to make a reliable firewire output....so i don't think the market value of such a thing is lost on him, it's just not as simple as putting a firewire port on the back of the box.

Only way to run 24/anything in the field right now is on laptop, right?  I wonder how many laptop tapers and laptop field recording engineers there are.  Relative to the market numbers for the V3 as it stands today as well as their market numbers for their other gear (801, 201, 101, 901, 904, 906) I suspect relatively small.  Hence, their focus on the V3 as it exists today and their other gear.

add to that studio engineers who do project work on the road and dont want to have to carry big rack units with them just to listen/edit their projects. you would be surprised how many there actually are!

Fair enough, I hadn't thought of that.

Shoot, I don't even care about 24/96, I'm just tired of DAT (and not willing to go the laptop route).  Gimme an optical out on the V3 and I'll be happy!  But, that's not going to happen any time soon, either.  Hence my testing the Hosa ODL-312 AES/EBU > S/PDIF optical format converter with my V3/JB3.  I have high hopes, but expect to be disappointed.

I'm still wondering if M-Audio's FW endeavor will be successful or if they'll hit the same problems Metric Halo did.

Haha, Scott. You'll have the $ when you ditch your ULN-2. I'll check out John Kelly's at CL or VACO next week.

Luvean, acoustic music should tell you more about how a unit sounds than most PAs could ever hope to.

Is the difference between 24/48 and 24/96 pretty large?

Ahh, the sample is in another thread - I'll check it out when I get home. If John doesn't mind giving me the SPDIF out of the 410, rather than going to DAT, I can test it out. Of course, to do your test requires that I run Spark and not DP4 ... maybe he'll want to run 4021>FW410, or I can test it out if there's an opener.

All to be determined.

i think the human ear can hear the difference in the right environment...the 24/96 studio dvd-a's that i have v. some that are 24/48, there is a noticeable difference...obviously not a scientific test as they are different recordings, etc.  ... not sure whether taping a PA, especially from the section, there is a worthwhile difference...but i bet for what moke tapes, you can hear it.

Why the hell would I want to run 4021>FW410???  The MC012s are so much better... ;)

I'm up for any kind of tests you want to try.

I would care less about the mod's if someone would come out with a lappy or hd recorder with spdif in...heard the new mac 5's have it?
