I'd say 600-700 out of the gate...about a happy medium for the current machines...

It doesn't support most HD-DVD features, just playback.  It's a good first step, but it's not the holy grail people have been searching for.

Now we just wait and see if sony sues them

All features except playing the movie.

The player includes both red and blue laser diodes, which enables it to read all three disc formats. However, while users can take advantage of all the interactive features included on Blu-ray discs, it is currently limited to simply playing HD DVDs without their interactive functions, Ahn said.

that's too bad, but it wouldn't be a deal killer for me.  like you said, it's a good first step.  i don't know much about LG's reputation in this area so it will be interesting to see what people think when this deck hits the street.

One of the main reasons is that HD-DVD players have two video decoders so that the features can take place while the movie is playing.  BluRay does not have this, so unless the combo players start adding a second video decoder (I don't see why they wouldn't) it wont happen.

And LG isn't a highly regarded name in the home theater industry. ;)

this is just the beginning.  there's going to be a pile of these dual format machines in a years time.  In a few years time, I bet they'll be selling at walmart for $30 and angry women across the US will be fighting over them the day after thanksgiving.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

Turns out LG cannot bring this to market with the blessing of the DVD consortium (which would mean they couldn't advertise or even list that it had HD-DVD compatibility).

And no word yet on a lawsuit from Sony, either. ;)

so does that mean that they do or do not have approval of the DVD consortium?  i figured since it was listed on best buy's site, they were bringing it to market.

They don't.  It wont stop Best Buy from advertising compatibility if they want, but LG cannot.  Here's the original info:
