bvaz - when you use a 32g card, does your deck recognize it as such?

Mine gives me th option of 2g or 4g in the formatting screen, but that's it. I can not remember if when I last used the 8g card if it gave the option or recognized it as an 8g.
It does however, allow for the file size of the 8g. I put it a 4g and tried some different settings, then put the 8g, and tried the same settings again. They all came up as twice the recording length. So it does recognize and alot the proper record time for the 8g card.
???

mine had a 16gb card, in stand by it showed the record time left as ___ based on the settings
you shouldn't see the 8gb in the menu because recording an 8gb file isn't an option

right, I just put in the 32 GB card and format it.  it doesn't give me the option of 2 GB or 4 GB when i am formatting.
I can still only record to a 4 GB file size.  if I'm running 24/96 and I hot record on a freshly formatted card, it gives me just under 16 hours of remaining time on the card but still only roughly 2 hours of record time before it will stop.

This weekend I'll try multiple takes of over 1hr. and report back.

Oh, and to answer a question- When I was recording originally, I was using batteries, and there was plenty of battery life left when I shut it down.

Lets be clear on this. The 2GB and 4GB setting in the menu is for the max file size while recording, meaning if you format for 4GB, any one file size can be no larger than 4GB. Has nothing to do with the card size.
You cannot format a card at 96/24 and then change the setting in the menu without reformating the card.

George2- Thanks for making that clear.

I tried recording in the same format, with the same card, just to see if it was a fluke. It was not- same bad results at 1:01.
Next I dialed it down to 24/48 w/ the same 8gb card- the recording went to 2:04, then the same digital clicking came on. I noted, though, it was not visible on the led levels.
Hoping it was just the card; I tried a 4gb card at 24/48. It recorded up to 2:04- then the noise.
I'm currently trying a recording with the 8gb card in 16bit.
Kinda bummed out; thinking it might be an issue for Oade bros.

we know its not that card if it does it on 2 different ones
i still think its hitting the 2gb file mark and "stopping"
but page says it should stop totally, for some reason i think yours isn't

24/96 will hit 2gb mark at 1.01
24/48 will hit 2gb at 2:04
somewhere there is a chart from sound devices (here it is - http://www.sounddevices.com/calculator/ )

now if i am correct at 16/48 you will get the noise around 3:05 and 16/44 around 3:22

while true, if he's using the 4gb wav file setting (and I think he is), then it's still a mystery. I haven't touched one in a couple years now so I'm working off of memory.

I remember doing a 24/88.2 recording once of a Radiators show and instead of 2 sets, they did just one and I got to the 2 hour mark and chopped part of the encore break cause I was set to run over. That big file was just shy of the 4gb mark.

Next I dialed it down to 24/48 w/ the same 8gb card-

This is confusing to me. Could you use the term "I reformatted the same 8GB to 24/48"
Otherwise it appears you are just changing the settings in the menu.

You can change recording setting if you change the setting in the BWFF file Fostex created at the formating.

You can do that with a computer and a card reader

I  got my Fr-2le back from repair 2 months ago, the problem was after about 1 hour of recording my levels would jump up on there own.

After 2 weeks of testing it they found it was  a bad ribbon cable.

The 2gb / 4gb choice is of file size limit, not card formatting.
I am not certain why anyone would not stop / start a recording once in a while.
The odds for file integrity go way up.

I haven't had much time in the past week or two to do any testing that gives different results.

Kozakz- I tried to use the card reader to reformat and or change settings. After doing that and putting the card back into the deck, turns out the deck didn't like how the card was setup, and reformatting the card in the deck was the first prompt.

Doingthatrag- Do you remember what the settings were at when the issue came up? This is very important, because it could (if you read the whole thread) be the same issue I am  experiencing (which is driving me crazy!). Did you send your deck to Fostex, Oade Bros, or a third party?

I sent it to Oade.  I always run 24/96 with 4 gig file limit. He said the more expensive fostex units are known for bad ribbon cables, oade said my fr-2le was the first one he seen with a bad ribbon cable.

He really did fix it, I use this unit more than my 722 (several times a month) cause it just sounds better all around thanks to oade's upgrade.

Awesome! That's got to be it!
I had my deck upgraded from Oade as well. I will get in touch w/ Doug directly.
Thanks so much!  ~  Mike D

Hey Mike for some strange reason I can not send you a PM.  My name is Rob Krall and I think I paid 110.00 for the repair including shipping. I am no spring chicken and a couple of months ago can mean a lifetime to my memory.

Dont forget to tell Doug how much he rocks too !!

Peace.
