DAC's here... need an optical cable
« on: January 20, 2004, 12:44:08 PM »
Does it matter? After doing lots of reading it appears that expensive coax is a bit of a waste. How about optical cable?

I’ve had a few weird experiences and a few close brushes with total weirdness of one sort or another, but nothing that’s really freaked me out or made me feel too awful about it. - Jerry Garcia

for short runs, 0's and 1's are 0's and 1's.  this all changes over the long run.

that's the plan... CD optical and cox out of the da20mkII

for some stupid reason I came to my morning class, there's a guest speaker I totally forgot about.. prof nowhere to be found and my DAC is just sitting in a box unused!

the sub will be here tomorrow!

I did some research on optical cables a while back and from what I understand the difference between a quality cable and an okay cable is amount of jitter.  Not sure if *I* can hear jitter with my current playback system (doubtful), but there are those who say they can.

If I recall correctly, more strands in the fiber = less jitter, and glass optical fiber introduces less jitter than plastic fiber.  Check the Archival Info forum for a thread with some quality (but inexpensive) optical cable recommendations.  I went with the Sonicwave, I believe.  Check the post, I think I noted which cable I bought.

I have an Audioquest Cinemaquest optical cable and I like it.

Nice!  I'm saying the same thing about my new preamp, and it isn't even burned in yet!!

hehehe... thanks Mike.

once I get the cd player hooked up with a new optical cable I can't wait to hear some of your stuff on here.

listening to my Dead 7-10-03 u89(subcard/nos)->V3 tape right now (my personal favorite tape that I've made) and there is so much air in the top end... the cymbals are smooth. I think the lowend sounds little nicer now too...

can't get off of the couch!

Sucks!  Hope you get the problem resolved soon, that's the pits.  Good luck, Tim.

aha! had to turn on the digiouts. went through about 6 menus to find it but it's on and working right now.

really happy with how this little box just smoothes everything out, takes the edge off of everything.
