Hi!

I'm considering to keep my CA-11 (cards/omnis caps) and sell my both CA-14 (card/omnis) and my AT853 (cards/omnis caps).

What do you recommend as a replacing mic? I was considering some of the MM-HLSC[-1], but I'm unsure...

My recordings are always stealth.

What kind of mic are you looking for? switchable caps? what pattern(s)? how much money do you want to drop? if you could only have 1 pick up pattern what would it be?

My preferred pattern is cardioid, and I would like to spend something between 250 to 300 US$.

Maybe some other have better ideas. I can't think of any mic that is a card and would be an upgrade from what you already have for that price.

I can think of 3 cardiod options and they are all mostly lateral (different flavor but similar sound quality).  The hlsc-1's as mentioned above, audix adx40 and shure mx185.  What kind of sound are you seeking?

I like the sound of CA-11. I think they are the best mics I have today. But I guess that I could go a step ahead.

The CA-14 are too big for my Jedi's level of "stealthness", and the AT-853 are too sensitive for some rock and blues' shows (and I don't want to spend money for modifying them).

So my idea is to keep the CA-11 for my day-to-day recordings, sell the others, and get a new mic, probably better than the CA-11.

I think that every cardiod that is an upgrade in sound quality is both larger than you want and more money than you want to spend.  The church audix actives are the size that you want but just short of double your budget.

edit:  On second thought, the Audix micro caps are $150 each and you may be able to mount them on your existing ca11 bodies.  I believe that this could be a decent option.  Just make sure that you get the Audix caps that don't connect via a protruding center pin.

There is a set of Audix adx40 in the YS!  They are in your price range.

The pair of HLSC-1's that I used to own had had to be modified by the previous owner to handle high volumes...

Countryman B3 omnis are in that range price-wise and are maybe a quality step up.  All small cardiods in that price range are pretty limited IMO [edit to add: meaning, I think it is impossible to find a small cardiod that outperforms the mics you already have; that's as good as performance gets with small cardiods], whereas with omnis you can get some really strong recordings.  Depends what flavor you like; maybe the Audix would be better for you, or you could try to find an AKG ck9x active setup, but that'll be more like $500 probably once you get the power supply. But really, you have the two best options.

I would just keep what you have and save up for a way bigger upgrade, personally.  Or upgrade your omnis to the B3s.

The B3's were what I was thinking about in that price range great mics
