pre/adc upgrade ideas for 480s & jb3?
« on: November 27, 2003, 08:54:52 AM »
right now i run a warm mod ua5. and i like it, but i dont love it. i really hate the metering issues i have with this whole setup. and i have been thinking that i might want to run something that not everyone else is running.

need a good pre and adc reccomendations for the 480s and jb3. so i must have an optical output on the adc.

can be a one box solution or a 2 piece setup

any ideas? can be in the 500-850$ area, maybe a little higher...

Thanks

there's the obvious ones, and the ones that will actually sound great with 481(3). eaa psp2 used (600), and ad500e or 1000, nowadays, you can come in under 1000 and maybe even get a 12v and breakout. And Paul Plotnik is fixing them. Sick, sick sick. Imo 480's, like 4022's, really need transformers to sound good, since they are so flat.

so this Paul Plotnik guy is fixing the apogee ad500/1000s now since apogee wont fix them anymore? so if i were to buy one of these units i wouldnt have to worry about it taking a shit and becoming a paperweight?

Definitely buy the Apogee has an optical out for your JB3. Pick a pre of your choice most of the colored pres sound good with 480's.  PSP-2, Sax, should be in your range. m148 would be nice though ;)

a great sounding, simple set up with the 480s is: Power Supply -> Hosa transformers -> modSBM1 -> 7pin to optical cable -> jb3

agreed on the 481>hosa>mod, good sounding setup, not a lot of shit to carry around. The psp2 can have internal battery cage issues, and the adk/500e....well, lyou know the issues. The mod will give you plenty of color. And you can always add an eaa, mp-2 or sax later on. The sax might be the only non-transformer input pre that might sound good with 481. Nice and warm. Or pick up a mme for 950-1000, the 481's are flat enough to cut the tub on the mme somewhat.

how are the pres on the ad1000? would it get me by for a month or 2 while i saved for a psp2 or a sax and actually found one used?????

i dont have tons of shows lined up to tape, just a bunch of local stuff, and i do archive for a local band that is damn good!

so ive found an ad100, and all the breakout cables and stuff

still under warranty, so that means apogee has to fix it untill the warranty is up, and even if the warranty isnt transferrable the guy i am buying it from will send it back in

still need some opinions on the pres in the ad1000

almost time to post the warm mod ua5 for sale in the yard sale section, bet it goes quick!

from the couple ad1k tapes i've heard w/out running a pre in front i think it sounds ok - nothing great but it i'll work until you add a pre.  might want to look into the mp2 as well, i was always pretty happy w/ my 481(3) > mp2 tapes.

the guy im looking into on the ad100, i just bought his 483s, and he also ran the mp2 > ad1000 and said it was what he liked

it will be alot easier and cheaper to find an mp2 right now too, and i can always sell the mp2 if i were to find a psp2

thanks for the info, its exactly what he said about the pres "definantly decent but not the best out there"

im getting the ad1000, ive made my mind up

havent heard the 480's w/ this combo yet, but id LOVE to hear it.....psp-3>mme w/ the schoeps are my fav tapes, really suite sounding, i know the 480's dont have the 'color' that the schoeps do, but i think it wouldbe a sick setup that not many ppl run..... 8)

um....before you pull the trigger on that adk, you better check on that warranty being transferable. I asked apogee about this 6 months ago, and they refused to honor a warranty upon transfer of the unit.

The pre in the ad1k was good enough for me when I used it.  I had the platinum, version however with the upgraded pre's.  I also ran a sax->ad1k combo before the mini-me. I suppose I liked them both about equally!  One thing to keep in mind is the 24 bit capabilities of the mme.  The mme at 24 bit sounds nothing like the 16 bit tapes, and I mean not even close IMHO!  Too bad you didn't keep those gefell's, the mme/apogee stuiff is made for those mics in particular!

The AD1k Pre is alright. A little thin in the middle if you ask me, though. It would get you by for a while.

mini-me...one should pop up.  It's funny how the mini-me sale came along with everyone judging it at 16 bit then now, people running at 24 bit hoard them...me included!

Keep watching ebay, they pop up once a week...I will watch for you as well!

what do you think about mp2 > ad1000

what do you think are the differences, good or bad, beetween the mp2 and the pres in a platinum ad1000

What are you trying - or do you want - to change about the sound of your recordings?  Understanding why you want to change gear will help you make the appropriate decision, whether it be a different pre, ADC, or mics.

Of course, changing for shits and giggles is always an option, but...I think people are usually looking for a different sound.

i just havent found a sound that i am totally into yet. i think that with the mod, the pres are fine in the ua5, but i think maybe the adc is a little lacking.

This is exactly what I'm getting at, Dustin.  What exactly about the sound prevents you from being totally into it? What do you find lacking?

While it takes some time, critical listening, and often effort to track down other recordings with different gear combinations to help understand the answers to the above questions, understanding the specific, detailed answers to these questions will help in your decision making process.

I agree, the pre's are good, even better with the Oade upgrades, but the ADC just doesn't do it for me.  I've been meaning to get with Jeff and run some wmod UA-5 / wmod UA-5>ad500e comps to see if that's what I'm hearing.

If you go with the AD1K, you can run it individually just to see if that works for you, and you can always add another pre later with no trouble (which you can't do with the minime) if it isn't quite doing it for you.  I'm biased (like everyone), because I tend to prefer the apogee AD's to anything out there

FWIW, you can't use the UA-5 as a true standalone pre - there is no analog passthrough.  The signal path for its analog outputs:

analog in > ADC > DAC > analog out

So if you run wmod-UA5 > AD500e, you'll not only have the UA-5 ADC in the path, but also the DAC.

if you pick up the ad1k you're more than welcome to borrow my mp2 for a couple weeks if you're willing to pay the shipping costs.  i'll be using it for a couple chris thile and mike marshall shows in december but after the 18th i won't be needing it again until february so it's all yours for january if you're interested.
