Title: AKG Active Cables
Post by: down2earthlandscaper on June 22, 2018, 03:04:07 AM
Ok, not sure if this should be in "cables" or "microphones and setup", but anyway - I have some AKG's with Naiant active cables (also have the full body 480's) and I love them so far. Only thing... the Naiant active cables are really quite stiff and I find that I really have to be pretty careful about how I position the mics and then tape down the cables pretty well, otherwise the tension/force in the cable can easily push the mic out of alignment.

Getting to the point: is there an alternative active cable for the AKG that isn't so stiff? I'd love to have a cable as supple as what's on the DPA 4022's. Especially if I ever want to use these in a  >:D sort of way... The current cables I have are just so rigid that it would just about make  >:D an impossibility...

By the way, these cables are "tech flexed" so that might be contributing to the stiffness factor.

Maybe you should try Nicks Nbob cables? I love them. My cable has a 6-pin connector but I'm pretty sure he can also make these cables with two XLR's. Here's a picture:

Yes, it’s the techflex.  The section after the splt can be removed.  Hit me up if you would like me to mod them.

Ted does excellent work and is a great communicator.  You can trust him with your valuable gear, and he typically has great turnaround time.

PS, do you build active cables? (Thinking of a second pair anyway....)

These can be ordered directly from Naiant

https://naiant.com/studio-electronics-products/inline-devices/pfa-phantom-power-adaptor/
For the "Input" Option, choose "4pin Binder for Naiant Coupling for AKG"
Barrel Type = Standard Mono.
Length = Your Choice

Can Jon still make the couplers? I may have misunderstood the last time i asked him. I tried to order another pair last month and he said something along the lines of he can make the cables but not the couplers anymore.

Any leads on just the couplers? Shoepsnbox?

Nick’s are designed with hard wired cables vs 4pin binder naiant actives.  The build quality quality is much higher then the naiant couplers.  Nick’s actives can run off an nBox or Pfa with phantom power.

Reviving a dead thread...

I'm going to order some AKG nbobs. What's the ideal connection for PFAs?

I'm hoping to run something like this: CK61 > nbob (~15 feet, singular output TA6F?) > PFA x2 > MP6

I just ordered some nbobs for my new gefell setup and here's what I ended up doing....

gefell active 2 feet to ta6.

12 foot single belden 1804a ta6 extension cable w/ techflex

6 inch pfa with ta6

The reason I did a short active and then an extension is because a few venues here in town we have long permanent sets of xlr's in the ceiling.  if I just had the long nbob I would have to coil up 12+ feet of cable in the ceiling to connect my pfa's to the xlr's.  this way I have less than 2 feet to deal with in this situation.  I'm not a  >:D guy but if I were a short set is a whole lot easier to deal with as well.  I should be getting them in today and will post pics in the team gefell thread.

Thanks Gordon. I'm assuming that the "standard stereo" barrel option will just be two normal XLR outputs from the singular PFA. Can you confirm?

Best to discuss with Jon and Nick.  Nick had "nbox" style pfa's on hand which is single ta6 connection on the pfa.  he had me order unterminated pfa nbox style to replace the ones he used for mine.  no need for an nbox just gives you options.  so my extension cable is a single cable with ta6 on both ends.
