KCY 250/5 Ig w/ PFA?
« on: February 04, 2016, 05:16:44 PM »
Making the leap to Schoeps and I am thinking of buying the KCY 250/5 Ig with a Naiant PFA.

Any reason not to go this route, other than price? I figure I can extended the cables with simple XLRs b/t the PFA and recorder if needed and this would limit the unbalanced section of the setup to just the  KCY. I really like the idea of the single cable setup with the KCY and have true Schoeps connectors at the caps.

it's a good choice and will work very well. I have this setup and the single cable is indeed very nice.

Do you think you would ever want to get a wider split with the mic capsules? If so another option is to get KC5 cables and chop them and terminate them in PFAs.

I have some KC5s but haven't chopped them. They're nice but keeping them from getting tangled is hard for me.

I tend to use CMC6 bodies most of the time now but the KCY is great and any time a small rig i can run in ORTF or DIN is called for it's the way to go.

jon (Naiant) has mentioned in the past that using "chopped" kc5s terminated with mini-xlrs for this solution will keep the connection balanced throughout.  My kc5s are ziptied together at 12" intervals -- makes it easier to coil/maintain than without, but kc5s do take some patience to keep straight.  I also had darktrain attach mini-xlrs to the "chopped" kc5 ends that attach to mic bodies, allowing me to use the kc5s with pfas or with cmc bodies (darktrain also made me a minixlr>binder connector that lets me run the kc5s into my tinybox) -- fwiw . . .

I also prefer KC5's over the KCY. I replaced the Schoeps cable with 1/8" cable.

Me either, and Ive had [2] different Schoeps KCY's[still have 1], and I have an NBob KCY now too! Never had an issue with either being unbalanced, so no way I would ditch the KCY to go to KC5's :) The single cable is sooo quick and convenient! Just icing on the cake IMO 8) But I do prefer the balanced connectors better, and was another reason why I wanted to sell my M10 stuff and get another 70d, so that I was DONE with 1/8" plugs for now 8) But everyone has different needs and expectations :)

I bought a KCY and love it! Setup and tear-down is so easy without a tangled mess.

I have both, and I use the KCY much more often. I will use KC5>CMC6 for mission-critical applications, but I've never had an issue with the KCY>PFA except for one time when the temperature was in excess of 100 degrees indoors.

Just out of curiosity, why is the performance of the KCY>PFA setup temperature-dependent?

So I've never held a kcy but hear that it's a real stiff cable, too stiff for kangol work. No?

Not real stiff.  Just not easy to coil up quickly if you need to.  About 15' in length i think.
A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Yea, the NBob KCY might be better for steal&*ing IMO! The Schoeps cable is thicker and has lasted me well over 5 years! I do like the easiness of the NBob cables though! They're easier to mount and setup/teardown! Depends on your situation honestly! I want my 250/5 cut AFTER the junction box, ala my NBob KCY, because its much easier to setup/teardown!

I think he meant he kept the Collette's the same, but just used different cabling than the thicker Schoeps cabling, right ???

I am considering the same setup (MK41>KCY 250/5 > PFA).

Does anyone run KCY 250/0 with KS 5 extension cable? Thinking the second option would be nice to have the caps and KCY mounted on a stereo bar and then have the option of running PFA > Long XLR for longer balanced runs. Other than cost any other negatives. The second option is about $130 more than straight KCY 250/5.

I have the KCY 250/5 and a KCY PFA.  I typically run the KCY right into my Lemosax but have considered getting the KS 5 for longer runs.  I cannot think why it would be a problem running it in between the KCY and PFA.  $130 for an extra 16' is not that bad of a price in "Schoeps World".

I've had Darktrain make me a number of KCY extensions. Among them are two single 30 feet KCY extension cables, as well as a snake: 30 foot *pair* (i.e. 4 channels) of KCY in a single tekflexed cable. It's perfect for getting microphones into the perfect spot, and then running cables to your seat. Lots of good gaffers tape and KCY extension cables makes virtually any decent balcony seat into DFC front row rail, for example.
