for a budget mic, they are great in my opinion.

ive done a couple open taping shows and have made some fantastic tapes....

they are also small enough that you can put them inside of a hat.... you're pretty limited to the configuration you run them in up there... one time I ran them ORTF and my hat was as obvious as it gets.... now when I stealth them, I do it just pointing straight ahead....

contact me to DL a couple sample SHNs of recent recordings Ive made.

I also have a set and have been totally satisfied.
The switchable caps are a dream, and make the mic suitable for most situations.
I have only used them in open taping situatons, but have had terriffic results.

I used to run MC012s and think they're one of the best price/performance values out there right now.

And I agree  - switchable caps?  Nice!

If only someone made inexpensive active cables for them...

Have to go with matched pairs IMHO. I don't own them but a buddy did and were not matched sounded like ass. But then I heard some matched pairs and were pretty nice.

No difference just different Russian translation.  These are the only two places I have found that sell matched pairs (some one else chime in if they know any others)

www.recordingservices.net

www.oktava.com

Recording Services are the cheapest ($305 for cards) I contacted them and they said they could do a hyper only set for $350.  I contacted the Sound Room to try to get them to match the price and they said that recording services does not offer a warantee.  The Sound Room has a two year warantee.  I tried to contact Recording Services to confirm that they had no warantee and have yet to hear a reply.  Check out www.nickspicks.com for a review of these mics by a respected taper (I guess Nick is respected ;))

Am I the only person that is not impressed with these mics?  I think the qwuality control on them stinks, and that they are very poorly made.  I would much rather drop the coin on some akg 393's than these, and they are about in the same ballpark pricewise.  Maybe I just haven't heard the right recording or something, but I have never heard a good on.  My 2 cents, and YMMV

My understanding is the matched pairs are the cream of the crop while the shitty ones go to guitar center and the like.  Not that it matters, but many recording mags have given them pretty high marks.  The main reason I think I'm gonna give em a whirl instead of going with the 391s is their small size.  Plus with the matched pairs you can sell them for pretty close to the price you pay for them new.

No, I'm not a fan either.  When people ask what mics to get for <$800, I tell them to patch and save their pennies until they can afford better mics.  >$800 there are plenty of quality options out there.  I think they fall into the "you get what you pay for" category - I don' t think they are over-achievers.

I think these mics are abit underrated, but again you might think I am biased as I have them.

Matched pairs are the way to go, as the quality control is lacking. Been running them>sonosax>modsbm1>d8 & I have pulled some nice stuff. The highs & mids are nicely covered & with a pre the low is pulled in decently. Having the three caps is also a plus. For the money these mics are well worth it. If an active cable setup is out there I may never get rid of them ... Bottom line is "trust your own ears" ...

while I agree with Daryan and Craig and haven't heard the right tape or believe the ADKs are much better for just a smidge bling more, I can def agree with what silentmark says (that contradictory silent says...anyways)  Trust your ears, record for you, make tapes that sound good to you.

I just got my pair from the soundroom, and have used them only once, to tape my buddy's punk band.

Thanks to him for providing me some practice!

I'll have to say that I was really suprised at how well they did.  Pretty damn accurate!  I fugured they wouldn't be that great recording that type of music, but I just set them up in the middle of the room, AB witht he omni caps, and I think they did a great job.

I'll give them their first field test coming up here on the 6th, when Dicky plays the T.B. blues fest  :)

I ran them for a year, and they are a GREAT set of mics for the money (refferign to the matched 6 cap set from the soundroom).  Taylor is a great guy to deal with too.

fwiw, if I was to buy them again, i'd just get a pair w/the hyper caps and run the DIN all the time.  That is *the* setup that those mics really like, and the hyper cap is sweetest of them all.

I just picked up a Rolls dual phantom power supply for $65 including shipping.  I got it from Music123.com their list price is more but I found a place that sold it for cheaper and they beat the price by $5.  Email me and I'll tell you how to get the same deal.  Peace, Matt
