Battery Box Microphone Madness MM-EBM-1 Bass roll-off Setup
« on: April 18, 2010, 06:49:12 PM »
Hi,

I have a battery box microphone madness mm-ebm-1 and I don´t know how to make a good setup for it (I plug it in a R-09HR), I like to record metal concert, yesterday I recorded a Korn concert but the results were no very good, I can set up the roll off in 16, 69, 95, 107, 160, 195 and 888 hz, witch configuration would be the best??

Thanks!

If u have "cardiods" = no bass roll-off.  Not sure about "omnis".

lots of people will say go with o and roll it in post
but i always found it easier and better to go with 95 or 107 from the start
it killed just enough for me but not to much

my recording gear is:

 MM-MCSM-5 cardioids -> MM-EBM-1  -> Edirol R-09HR

so with 107 will record better...this means that the volume or the quality will be better? sorry but I´m a newbie with the setups

thanks!

^^^ You should not need to use bass rolloff with small cardiod microphones.  I would leave it at zero, probably, or just use 69.  I would not use a ton more than that.

If you are getting distortion, that is either an issue with the mics themselves distorting, or something with the deck.  If you are running line-in on the R-09HR (which shoudl ALWAYS be what you do for metal shows) then your issue is the mics, which need to be modified to accept higher sound pressure levels.

Looking at the description on your microphone, I think that might be your problem. I think these are the "budget" microphones and therefore your results will not be very decent. (Flat bass, some static, does this describe the recording?)

I just put in a request for some Church Audio mics upgrading from the Giant Squids Omnis. I guess a rule of thumb is anything less than $100 could be classified as budget mics, unless you find a sweet deal. I recorded a few shows with the Squids and the results have been what I would grade a B+ to an A- at best. Part of this was a low setting, the other was the mics themselves.

There are many options for upgrading, many here swear by Church Audio and the shows I've heard made from them are pretty impressive, especially considering the price range. Hope this helps.

helps a lot your comment, I smelled that, I was searching in the forum and the CA-11 seems like a good mic, they could perform well my battery box or I need to upgrade it too?

Where can I bought Church audio mics? i found a store only in ebay, is the only place?

Thanks!

Your should be good with your current battery box. Check the retail space on this board for more information on the Church Audio mics, you can also PM or email him there as well.
