Nagra Seven -experiences?
« on: October 05, 2014, 09:00:33 PM »
Wondering if anyone is using or has experienced the Nagra Seven?
http://www.nagraaudio.com/nagra-seven/

Looks like a sweet all in one recorder.
I like that it does not use CF cards and instead SD cards.

Anyone play with one of these?  how are the pres etc?

Sorry if this has been covered before I searched and didn't see a specific thread.

Looks really nice, but also really expensive for a 2-channel recorder.  For that price you could get a Sound Devices 633.  Seems like that's who this is designed to compete with though.

Yeah, talking Nagra on TS is like talking Porsche to a bunch of Volkswagen drivers...  or in my case, an Opal driver...

Sweet rig though!

well I could consider at SoundDevices rig, but don't really like their battery solutions or that they use CF cards.
I would imagine the nagra pres are on par with (or better than)  the SD pre's.

Just wondering if anyone has played with one?

FWIW, the SD 633 records to both SD and CF cards, and has a pretty slick quad-powering system.  Definitely a step up from 7 series in those departments.  http://www.sounddevices.com/products/633/

Im curious - why do you dislike CF cards?

I know the 633 uses both.  I'm not sold on a 3 mic pre and 3 line in rig. My DR 680 is nice, but I'm thinking about getting a matched pair of Milab DC-196's and would like a straight forward two track option. I could go with the SD USB-pre2 and a HD-P2 or my 680, but am exploring other high end options., with an awesome preamp and  2 track. As I can do multi track with the 680. I know there are also the Roland R-88 and Tascam HS-p82 .
I only don't like CF cards as they are still quite expensive and I'd need a card reader, I can easily insert an SD card in to my computers w/o a reader + I already have tons of SD cards and they are cheap for fast cards, + smaller than CF. I got rid of all my CF cards when I sold my Fostex FR-2LE.

Awesome preamps and 2 track (and more) = Sonosax MiniR82. Slightly larger than an M10, with pre's equal to or better than SD / Nagra etc. The sound quality is simply amazing.

Yes - The Nagra Seven pres are on a par with the Nagra VI, AETA 4MinX and Aaton Cantar and would be a step above the SD ones.

the Aeta 4minx looks awesome... and like
Aeta Systems - 4 MIN X Multi-Track Mixer-Recorder - Pro-Sound Low Price: $6,200.00
while the nagra seven is : $3,300.00
Perhaps 3 grand more is not much more (though its about 2x more)  but it would also pay for the mics I seek.

I could always get a SD USB Pre2 and use it digi into my Tascam DR-680. Though I do like a slim/small gear package,  which is why I like the idea of an all in one box.
I love my Milab VM-44's  (no bodies) into a TinyBox > M10, light weight and compact with a great sound.

I like the looks of the sonosax SONOSAX MINIR82   anyone know what they run?

I suppose I could always get a SD 722...

I was seriously giving the Nagra Seven some thought around November last year and went so far as to inquire about pricing and delivery lead time since it hadn't starting shipping yet.  This was right before the SD633 came out.  Like you, my main wild card concern was I REALLY wanted to know what the preamps sounded like and without any samples to go off of, I wasn't fully convinced I wanted to commit that level of investment without some more concrete feedback, so I decided to wait.  In the meantime, the 633 came out at the same price as the Nagra Seven.  The release of the 633 really drove up the supply of used 744 and drove down the price.  The drop in the 744 price was enough of a game-changer for me that I decided to go with a used 744 at $1300 less rather waiting it out longer to hear some actual reviews on the Nagra Seven.  This decision was influenced by the fact that I already have several Schoeps VMS preamps that I'm extremely pleased with, so that decreased my need for the high quality preamps that I was hoping from the Nagra and brought the 744 back into the equation for me.
