Only 48 kHz and still not enough storage space. It also appears to have a pre and ADC. Whichever manufacturer is the first to come up with a unit that is simply a hard drive that accepts an SPDIF stream up to 24/96 (or 192, but I dunno if that's possible over SPDIF), has a record and stop button, creates multiple files with each record function, has no file size limit, and connects to a computer via USB or Firewire - this manufacturer will absolutely OWN the field. If they can keep the price under $500, the whole DAT world is theirs, plus anyone using a laptop is likely to convert as well.

The iPod is an SPDIF input away from this, with some firmware/software tweaks.

I hope someone figures it out, and soon!
Out of the game … for now?

it's really not an issue with the difficulty of the problem.  the real stumbling block is as always money.  R & D expenditure against perceived return.  like it or not, we (remaining DAT users) as a consumer group are a drop in the bucket, and will be catered too last.  basically, we'll get some kind of remodeled/ scaled down units after the Professional market has become saturated.

Dunno about CF, but I think Microdrives (which fit in a CF type 2 slot) can get up to 5 gigs, maybe even higher (haven't checked in a while).

I agree an ipod with a spdif and firmware/software tweaks would be perfect, IMO

Why does everyone assume that an iPod will be any better than a jb3? What has iPod done to win over so many as a potential recording device? Besides, it's Apple. If an SPDIF interface ever becomes available, it will be pretty pricey. A total cost would still be comparable to a new DAT, which isn't far off from a decent laptop. But hey, the iPod looks pretty cool. I'd get one once it becomes a little less expensive.
