Any suggestions? Bene kinda watching Ebay but not really sure what is worth getting and what is poo.

Any deck in good shape should be fine. Look for the tascam units, or the sony r500. You should be able to score a tascam da-20 or 30 fairly inexpensively.

i believe the 30 has a dislike of 90m tapes though.

Thanks guys, I guess I will just watch some auctions for a while.

Are Sony decks normally considered pretty good? I have always had good luck with other Sony probucts and would like to stick with them if possible.

I have an R300 I got off ebay for $200...brand new. Damn thing crapped out after a year and I needed to get ~$225 worth of work done to it. Apparently it has shotty transports and construction in some points and it just failed. Thankfully Pro Digital was able to fix it, but keep this in mind with the R300, supposedly it is an ongoing problem.

This is the biggest problem with the R300. I had the same thing happen to mine. Pro Digital was able to fix it and I haven't had any problems with it since then.

Looking at the D5s on EBay right now. Saw that one went for under $100. Is that a really good deal or are the other ones($150+) over-priced?

$100. is almost too good a deal. even though i own one, i have never checked the hours, or if you even can. i don't know if it's manual is in the archive or not.

Found a manual for the R500 so I can get these people to check hours. What is a decent range on hours for home decks?

Home decks can typically go thousands of hours...at least 3000 and probably closer to 5000. If it's coming from a person and not a studio, chances are good it'll be toward the lower end of that scale. Anything under 1000 will give you years of use, I'd say.

Pretty much what John said.

To me the the D-5 & Sony r500 are the only two home decks that are built like tanks or worth even buying used. If you buy one used, send it in to checked out & cleaned, even if it ends up not needing it. Pro Digital will do it and with a quicl turnaround ...

kevin, the great thing about the d-5 is with the optical, you can go to pretty much any cd burner and MD, and you can use the xlr and aes in an archiving or board taping scenario. do it.

Just thought I would throw this in... But I got a Sony DTC-A6 off ebay for $125. The guy said it had low hours (but who knows!) and it was in great shape.

I've never had any problems with it, even with 90m tapes, and I use it for unpacking tapes and playback/transfers

It dosn't have many features, but I don't really care since I don't record with it. And SCMS isn't a issue since I don't do DAT > DAT anymore.
