Title: Sonosax SX-M2D2 Coming...
Post by: H₂O on September 28, 2017, 10:37:57 AM
Sonosax (via their 40th anniversary email) mentioned:

"A new 2 channels mic preamplifier / converter SX-M2D2 - under development - with AES I/O and USB interface"

Hope this actually is released, small and is affordable (less than $1K)

With the price of all their other gear I would rule out the "affordable" part.

Their ad8+ sells for about $4500-5000 - so that's about $600 per channel - so the unit will probably sell in the $1250 range but you never know

It would be interesting to know if it's actually a SX-M2 w/AD..  or based off of the SX-M2 w/AD.

I'd be surprised if it is based off the SX-M2 - I would think it would use their newest designs that are are used in the R4+ and AD8+  and I would also hope it is smaller then the original M2 as they crammed 8 channels of preamp/AD into a package smaller then 2x as big as the original M2 with the AD8+.  The AD8+ doesn't have internal batteries, nor analog outs - so we will see.  They may add a headphone to this unit.

my issue is the lack of a inexpensive and simple bit bucket on the market. Why is this so hard?

My mixpre6 has no digi ins, so in theory I'd be interested in a fancy pre for the line in on 5 and 6. I'm not interested in paying for a AD stage I'd never use.

The http://puebloaudio.com/isleta---battery-preamp.html looked promising, but seems to be vaporware.

If sonosax could do a small analog only pre, I'd buy it.

Frankly it looks perfect for 5/6 on the mixpre6. I’m not sure I want to Pay for an ad stage I won’t use though.

It can take Sonosax years to release new products - the original SX-R4 was in development for 3-4 years

Sonosax was quick to respond to my inquiry concerning pricing and a product release date but unfortunately there isn't much information to share on either of those items yet.  Here is the Sonosax response.

"Hi,

Really happy to receive such an email! We are working hard on that product, but I cannot give you for now any delivery date nor pricing.
Will create the product page on our website and update status there.

Thanks,

Vincent Maillard"

This from the Sonosax Facebook site.

Does SONOSAX have an anticipated release date for the new SX-M2D2?

SONOSAX:  We expect production for end of year, perhaps beginning of 2019.

Yes on all fronts. It also accepts USB-C 5v power, which is a plus.

Personally, I'm not a fan of miniXLR (TA3) connectors for the long haul, but they help keep the form factor very small.

Brother. You got to let it go.

Words’ meanings develope and change over time.

Descriptively, phase and polarity are synonymous in this context.

From a user standpoint, as long as you know what this control does and how to use it, all is fine. The Capn has a valid point, however. In terms of what this control does to the audio waveform," phase inverting" would be the most accurate description. The generally accepted end-user term has always been "polarity reverse" Throwing in a 3rd term of "phase reverse" tends to muddy the water a bit. I'm all for keeping things as simple as possible.

Gotta love Sax...post pics and product specs before they finish design.  People had to wait a looong time from announcement to release of the sx-m4+. They haven't started taking pre-orders so looks like early 2019 might be optimistic.

Any bets what this comes in at?  I'll wager a starting guess of $1699.

This is probably because the device itself is not a recorder (i.e. the way Zaxcom filed the patent).  I bet the SX-AD8+ is the same way

This looks really promising.

I just picked up an R4+ and am blown away by its quality. I do nature recording and find the mike preamps and AD stage as good as it gets for my purposes.

One thing that I find especially nice about the R4+ is the DAC/Headphone stage. It's truly exceptional and rivals all the preemo DACs I've heard. That number isn't very high, but my point stands, I think.

If Sax is able to match the DAC on the R4+ with this new device, I should think that it would be a perfect capture/mixing machine.

Hmmm. "Polarity" would be more apt, but that doesn't make "phase" wrong. Inverting the signal polarity causes all the components of the signal--conceived of as individual sinusoids at each frequency where significant energy is present, like in a Fourier transform--to be phase-shifted 180 degrees from their previous selves.

It's a degenerate case of phase distortion, if you will. (And if you won't, then happy holidays anyway.)

I would be very surprised if it is not an asynchronous usb signal.    I haven't seen a USB audio product in years that is not asynchronous and would think Sonosax of all companies would think of this design limitation.

they dont advertise it as such. its advertised as "USB 2.0" which doesnt tell us anything as it can be adaptive or asynchronous. Dont assume that just because they make great audio hardware, that they make great computer interfaces.

Probably not as the USB on the MixPre is used to connect to a host device.  The host device treats the MicPre as a "slave" device and controls the MixPre.

The MixPre would need to be able to be a host device and support audio devices plugged into it to make this work (associated drivers/firmware support) would be required on the MixPre - physically it may be possible with the USBC connector but unless the mixpre can control the sonosax it would not work.

Well don't assume the opposite - Other usb devices on the market such as the SD MixPre and USBPre2 series don't advertise as supporting asynchronous USB either - should we assume it is unacceptable to use them as USB interfaces as well?

Can you provide a link?

I do see it support 4 channels in on USB audio in when connected to a Windows Computer with downloadable ASIO drivers (MAC OS usually handles this natively) - it doesn't specifically say you can us the mixpre as a master device for Audio purposes

I went ahead and asked support if the mixpre can take a USB signal (such as from the USBPre2) - I will post response here once I get it.

FWIW - I am reading is that all USB Audio Class 2 devices support Asynchronous USB and that the Sound Device products are class 2.  To be able to transfer above 24/96 2 channel class 2 is required.

"An ASIO® driver (v) for the MixPre Series by Ploytec is now available for download. With USB Audio Class 1 devices — that is, Windows-based computers without an ASIO driver — the MixPre Series audio recorders are capable of sending two channels of audio (L, R) and receiving two channels of audio via USB to/from the computer.
This software driver adds ASIO support in Windows OS for the MixPre-6 and/or MixPre-3. With the ASIO driver installed, Windows-based computers become USB Audio Class 2 devices, which means the MixPre-6 can send eight channels (1-6, L, R) to the computer and receive four channels from the computer via USB, while the MixPre-3 can send five in and receive two out. The ASIO driver for the MixPre Series allows for low-latency operation and max sample rate for USB audio up to 96 kHz on Windows computers. This driver supports Windows 7 and later, both 32- and 64-bit versions."

As far as devices go that can take aes. i intend on using it on my old 744t . it takes aes in on all four channels and i already have an Audio root Upre mk 11 that i use aes in . This will
give me four channels of aes in . I was going to buy another Audio root Upre mk 11 . but it appears they are not making anymore of them. Plus if this can work with an Android thats
going to be another tool in the arsenal. All of these use a Hirose to power these boxes and deck so a distribution box for power is in the cards.

unless its asynchronous the usb signal will almost certainly be a compromise relative to spdif in terms of jitter

Well don't assume the opposite - Other usb devices on the market such as the SD MixPre and USBPre2 series don't advertise as supporting asynchronous USB either - should we assume it is unacceptable to use them as USB interfaces as well?
I never said it was unacceptable, I said it was a compromise in design, Which we see all the time with portable gear

I’m not sure if class two designs necessarily use asynchronous. I know that class ones certainly cannot. But it does not necessarily mean in class two USB is always asynchronous, It really comes down to whether the device has its own clock or not and utilizes it, again that’s my take but it seems like most of us are speculating

From SD about feeding the MixPre-3/6/10 a USB audio signal such as from the USBPre2 or M2D2:

Quote
Thank you for contacting Sound Devices. If you are asking if the MixPre series can input audio via the USB-A or C connection from another USB audio device connection the answer is it does not support that feature. The USB-A on the MixPre-3 and MixPre-6 is for external controllers and keyboards and the MixPre-10T USB-A connection can also be used for thumbdrive data transfer. The only time audio can be input via USB-C is while the MixPre is being used as an audio interface with a PC or Mac computer, but not from another USB device connection.

You cannot connect a USB Audio device directly to the MixPre...

User Interface
128×64 monochrome OLED display
two rotary encoders for gain control
2 or 4 channels peak meters
intuitive menu navigation

i wonder how this works?
inputs:
this has
2ch AES3 or AES42 in
2ch mic/line in
2ch USB in

2ch USB out
2ch line out
+ another 2ch headphone/line out

does it map 4 channels to two separate outputs?

ive asked sax for more details

The Sonosax website (news) that mentions the 15% discount says the price is $1190 CHF (1198 USD).  Did they confirm your price above via email?  Their email back to me only included banking information, but no price.

Edit - I received another email confirming the discounted price is $1190 CHF, so $1198 USD currently.

talked to them over the phone this morning and got an email so i can do a bank transfer . the exchange rate varies day to day .usually a little bit .You may have to pay a VAT tax when delivered also should be small .

Yes, it constantly varies, but the CHF/USD rate hasn’t changed significantly over the last few years.

My point was that the exchange (with the discount) is closer to $1200 USD, not $1020 USD.

Their last email to me:
...the price of 1190.00 CHF is already with the discount.

so can this do 4 separate channels? (mic in + AES?) it shows 4 channel levels on pg 14 of the manual, but pg 20 and 21 suggest it works as a mixer only to 2-ch output.

can phones/lineout/aes out/usb out have different inputs routed to each??

i have a few Naztech 1500 and a few Monoprice usbc batteries . I have made a few rt angle hirose that i can use with the naztech to m2d2 . you should have quite a few options available out there . i doubt that this box will be real power hungry it all depends on the mics 48 v draw. I got his box a day or so ago and it comes with no ta3 cables so i have some ta3f coming and will build a set of break out mic cables and a ta3f to 3.5 right angle stereo . I'll also build a ta3f to xlr 110 ohm aes cable . i ordered a couple of usb to lightning and lightning to usbc cables that will work with a phone or tablet. for now i have a i pad that im going to play with . just waiting on connects . i have the cable and can solder . everything cable wise comes out the bottom so rt angle everything would be best ,

yes i also have a couple extra 1865 batteries and a charger . came with a vape that bit the big one . batteries seem to be fine ,can always get new . the battery swap is quick but i'll have to see if the setting still stay the same . if you have to set it up again that could be an issue in a dark venue especially stealth.

on another note  to power this up you have to push both knobs at the same time and it powers up . not a real fast start up either . then to set it up you use left and rt knobs to scroll through the menu and set it up for your particular use . i think there is a preset menu that once encoded will make it easy . kind of like the mixpre 3,6.10

Users Warning!

The preamplifier-USB converter SX-M2D2 has three power supply options: USC-C, Hirose connector and internal removable battery.

The battery must be present in the device to ensure that all functions are always available.

The SX-M2D2 can be powered only from one of its connectors for a few moments when replacing a discharged battery with a charged one.

i can confirm that the 18650 battery is being charged while you use external power source. i hooked up hirose and a naztech . the 18650 had about half charge . let it run awhile and 18650 was at almost full charge when i came back . just wish i had the cables to do tests and get it out into the field. Thats the way i think i'll roll thanks jerry

NEW (not refurb) 32GB SEs at best buy for $60

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/simple-mobile-apple-iphone-se-silver/6370444.p?ref=8575135&loc=3e990c5404cd11eab54996e3530149c00INT&acampID=3e990c5404cd11eab54996e3530149c00INT&skuId=6370444

while 32GB is less than ideal (20-24GB recording left after OS) this is pretty a good deal as ive only ever seen refurbs at this price, considering it should have slightly better battery and better reliability. locked to simple mobile and needs 12 months of paid service (min $300 to unlock) but for a dedicated recorder where cellular radio does nothing but drain your battery and cause activity from other apps, its a good match for our needs

since space is small these are great (and allows you to backup from metarecorder without a computer - also can play flacs and mp3s from them in sandisk app)

https://shop.westerndigital.com/products/usb-flash-drives/sandisk-ixpand-usb-3-0#SDIX30C-032G-GN6NN

also worth mentioning this is the smallest iphone out there with modernish specs (and supported by apple), last series with a real 2.5mm headphone jack, battery life is good

SE has been discontinued for a year these may be the last new ones around. the rumored SE2 will be a larger format they say (and of course no headphone jack)

ios 12 also good

ios13 prob work fine with d:vice but it def is a little more buggy of an OS and also takes up more space i think

if using as a dedicated recroder id test your setup with whatever OS it comes with and leave it there

i dont think you can upgrade to 12 at this point (maybe if you jailbreak it but im not that dorky when it comes to these)

also since these are new they come with a year of apple tv+ if thats your jam ($60 value)

I'm taking it out tomorrow night for Billy Strings at the Madison Covington Ky . Going to run it aes into my 744t .going to run one pair of DPA 4011c's .just a two channel pull .want to hear What this box has in it. i'll use a mobile phone later on after i try it out on some local gigs .that way if there are problems it's not as bad as a 40 dollar show.

Looking forward to hearing your first impressions from the field.  I hope to have a set of cables made, including an AES3 XLR cable, in the near future.

For spares for the internal batteries I ordered these Panasonic batteries (identical to the Panasonic battery that came with the M2D2).

I am leery about purchasing "shoddy bootleg batteries online" but the batteries that I received are identical to the battery that came with the unit.  Made in Japan.  Shipped from the USA.  The price on this 6 pack has gone up $2 in the past week.

I'm using this "smart battery charger" for the M2D2 internal battery.  it took between 5-6 hours to fully charge these batteries.

I got my M2D2 last week and have had a chance to test it out. This was a replacement for a my first unit which presented tons of pink noise/distortion on chs. 1 and 2 after only 20 mins. My dealer was quick to resolve the problem and the new unit seems to present no such issues.

Some unorganized impressions follow. For reference, I do nature/field recording and run Schoeps Omnis in either AB or with a Jecklin disk. I have used the SD 702, the Nagra Seven and currently own the Sonosax R4+.

-Build quality: this bests every recorder/preamp I've ever hand in my hands. Body and encoders are Leica-quality. The screen is small but readable.

-The unit turns on/off in an instant. It's immediately recognizable as a Core Audio device on macOS Sierra and, to my surprise, works with the iPhone flawlessly with the basic lightening to usb camera kit that SAX recommends.

-Audio quality: The preamps/AD are on par with the R4+ which is the best sounding portable recorder I've ever heard. Headphone stage is equally impressive. I use the Sennheiser HD 25s, which are efficient, so I have no idea how it might handle more taxing headphones.

-Powering: I set it up to run 2chs with P48 ON and headphones to see how long the battery would last. I wasn't actually sending the 1s and 0s to my iPhone, but that said I got 5 hours before it powered down.

My expectations were high for this product, and they've been met and surpassed so far.

If it works for me in the field, I might sell the R4+. I only run 2chs, and I don't believe I'll miss out on sound quality with the M2D2.

SAX posted the following the FB Users Group:

"Message to SX-M2D2 users: We encountered an electronic component problem on the first series of devices.
The analog mic/line inputs may in some cases not support a short circuit of the 48 V phantom power supply. Therefore, it is imperative not to switch on the phantom power when connecting an unbalanced source to the analog inputs.
We apologize for this malfunction which is already fixed on the devices delivered from today. The first series will be modified at Sonosax's expense for users who request it."

Plugging in an unbalanced line or mic source could roast the mic/line input? Yeah, let them fix this for you.

That's odd, I bought from Gotham and have had to deal directly with SAX. They've given me their FedEX account number, and I'm to arrange shipping there myself.

I admit that I'm a little miffed. I would have liked to have a new unit waiting for me stateside to switch out. But I understand SAX is a small company and the M2D2 is so nice that I'll get over it.

I'll keep folks updated on turn around time. I expect to ship mine out tomorrow.

DIY 3D files for SX-M2D2 Mounting accessory:

Sonosax provides these files for you to to play with and 3D print.

Slide your SX-M2D2 into this box, protective case, mounting accessory, whatever you like to call it. Hot shoe fixing slides allow you to attach it to a camera. You may also slide it into your sound bag. The connectors are protected and the cables come out elegantly on the side.

Feel free to modify the original file according to your needs and ideas. And if you do, send us your photos, the most beautiful ones will be published on the sonosax.ch website.

In this .zip file: DIY_MOUNTING_ACC  you will find:

SX-M2D2_FRAME.SLDPRT (Solidworks 2015 or later 3D file)
SX-M2D2_FRAME.STEP (Exchange 3D file)
SX-M2D2_FRAME.STL (3D printer file)
Note: Sonosax does not provide this accessory in physical form. Only files for 3D printing are available.

You may be able to send this to Shapeways and get them to produce it for you if you don't have access to a 3D printer with durable enough materials.

We have a cool "Makespace" in my town that has all sorts of gadgets that you can play with if you pony up for an annual membership. I should do it this year for stuff like this. I want to take a couple of AutoCAD classes and do things on my own.

You are correct.  One of the JWSoundgroup users, Patrick Tresch, did send this to Shapeways for printing.  I think that this is actually Patrick's design.

I don't have my unit with me at the moment (see above) but am I right in assuming that the USB driver root folder is on the M2D2 itself, and that once the files are moved to that directory, turning the machine on takes care of the update?

A question about the SX-M2D2 dynamic range. I read that the SX-R4+ dynamic range of 135dB is limited in the USA version to 114dB because of patent issues. Is the SX-M2D2 also limited in the US version?

EDIT: Got the answer to this question: No, it is not limited.

The SX-R4+ is limited as shipped, because of the Zaxcom patent, but the 135dB range is restored via a software update via the sonosax website. In other words, the limited range is a legal fiction.

I don't know if there is a similar issue with the SX-M2D2's dynamic range. But if there is, it is a non issue, solved in minutes by anyone with an internet connected computer.

Sonosax does not limit the dynamic range on non-recorder devices such as the M2D2 or AD8+.
The patent only applies to a Recorder.

Maybe a circuit topological difference in the arrangement of the 2 AD's per channel - don't know for sure.

Zaxcom isn't the first company to come up with the idea (from what I have read that the idea is from the late 1980's to early 1990's) and is almost trolling the idea.

I have no sympathy for Zaxcom, but we should remember that in US law, if you do not defend a patent, you lose the protection.  I think Zaxcom is aggressively litigious anyway, but they probably have a lawyer telling them they must be seen to protect their patent, whether it is justifiable or not.

aside from that, can you provide a link to where on the "on the Sonosax site" the dynamic range upgrade for the US R4+ is available? I have looked hard and cant find it.  Your mention is the first I have seen anywhere.  If I could find such a link, I'd be a lot happier about paying full price for a "crippled" US version. 114 dB does not reach 24 bit depth.
The M2D2 has the full dynamic range, and the 'same preamps'  as the EU recorder, says Sonosax.
I would think for USERS to download such a file and use it is our own business, like unlocking a phone, but for Sonosax to supply such a link on sisght might be construed as negating the 'US version" so-called patent avoidance (IMO we need not call it "patent compliance", because there is no proof there is a conflict, and Jacques does not want to test it at law with technical disclosure etc.). If they do it anyway, hurray for them.

For at least this reason, I do not buy Zaxcom products.   There is something about this that really bothers me.  I think there is a chance that if Zaxcom sued Sonosax for selling the units in the U.S., and if Sonosax could afford good legal counsel, Sonosax could win.  My 2 cents.

Meanwhile this SX-m2d2 sounds great.

I am sorry for not reading all the posts - but what would be a great recorder that would match it well?

Ran it today with DPA 4081 mics into a battery box (Church Audio), using a cable Sonosax made me to go from the 1/8" stereo out of the battery box into the line/mic in TA-3 inputs of the SX-M2D2.  From there to an iPhone with Apogee Metarecorder.  I have been using these mics into an iPhone with the DPA MMA-A for two years or more.  While the Sonosax setup is much bulkier (not only the SX-M2D2 itself, but also 9V battery for the mics), I am convinced the sound improvement is major.  No direct apples-to-apples comps, though.  One nice thing is that with the battery box powering the mics, the internal SX-M2D2 battery ran for two hours and seemed only about 1/3 down.

I intend to run it tomorrow as backup, I will use Schoeps MK21 caps with phantom from the Sonosax (and an external USB battery on the Sonosax).  My main pair (on piano and violin) will be Schoeps MK22s > Zoom F8n.

One nice thing: the DPA MMA-A is limited to 30 dB gain, with the 4081s on a quiet chamber music group I need to boost this at least 25 dB in post.  I ran too low today anyway (and both MMA-A and SXM2D2 take the 20dB boost with little damage).  But the SX-M2D2 will let me dial in 72 dB of gain.

Doesn't the clock precision on the recorder matter - or does it not in this case because it is being fed a digital signal that stays digital?  Thank you in advance.
