I'm DEAD serious. I would carry SLA if I still had a v3. They were tested to work reliably and are easy to use and power a v3 forever ;)

Thanks, but will never carry lead again.

If you have any basic soldering skills or hacking skills, hack a charging sled for the Sony np-f750 / np-f950 batteries (the same batteries used by the Sound Devices 722/702) and use those batteries.

The SD 702/722 style batteries are 7.2v, which works great for the V3, and are very easy and cheap to come by.  You can get knock-off batteries of this style that are 7.2v and 6600mah for under $20 or so.  Way easier to find than DVD batteries, and a lot smaller.

Get a charger like this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/110763237927

Or better yet, get two -- one for charging, and one "charger" for hacking.  I'm not recommending this ebay vendor (though they may be fine) it was just the first picture I could find.  This charger bed is "universal", and different "battery sleds" can be inserted into the charger.  The sleds are specific to the battery type (in this case, the Sony NP-F750), but the charger is made to accept many different sleds.

From the picture on the ebay auction, you can see the outline of the battery "sled".  This sled pops out of the charger.  It doesn't have any electronics (those are all in the charger body) -- just pull the sled out of the charger and hack into the sled to attach the right V3 coax power cable (a locking Switchcraft connector, I forgot the part number).  Use the sled to use the Sony camera batteries or generic equivalents (read through the 722 threads for ideas on specific batteries, but they are plentiful, high capacity, and cheap).  Use the second, non-hacked charger as your actual battery charger.

This probably sounds worse than it is, but it is an easy hack.  You can get these chargers for like $15 for 5 of them.  Someone needs to get Ted to make this as a regular product.  I use the 722 batteries all the time with my V3 and a sled like this.  Cheap, large capacity, reliably, small, and light -- what's not to love?

^Pictures would be helpful...I'm looking for cheap power on my V2...

WOW...just saw a BIN on a 8000mAh for $23.50 almost 60WH of power...who is keeping this a secret....I'm want to power my Fostex with a Tamyia plug on a second sled too...

Question how do you keep up with power remaining? Timer? Or does the V3 give a low battery indication?

I used to run a Sony Dummy Cell, the Sony DK-415. And put a 4-pin xlr onto it and hooked it up directly to my old v2

Ideas?

It can't be done.  2011 power is incompatible.  I believe polarity reversed way back in June 2009.

I'll try to get some pics put up.

Low battery indicator is the downside -- there isn't really any.  You might be able to (yourself, or with input from Grace) re-calibrate the low battery indicator on the V3 to be more useful.  I'm guessing something like 6.2-6.4v might work as a low voltage indicator for a (2-cell) li-ion pack that nominally provides 7.2-7.4v -- that might be in the calibration range for the V3.

For me though, I just run without one.  I know my larger battery is good for 6-7 hours or so, and the smaller for 4-5 hours. I don't really do festivals anymore, so I just go in with the batteries charged and assume the larger will get me through an opening act and 2-set main act.  I just use the smaller battery for opening acts if I think there is any possibility of running out of power.  I've had no problems running that way.  If I did do festivals, I'd just use my littlebox (which runs for 20+ hours on its internal li-ion on the low 20v phantom setting) for all acts other than the headliner, and use the V3 for the 1-2 headliner acts each day.
