quick squeezebox question...
« on: August 29, 2009, 11:46:26 AM »
is it possible to select more than one drive for the squeezebox to see and add to the library?
like, if i have songs on c:, d:, and e:, can i select all 3 drives somehow? i can't seem to make it work.

Yes.  But it's sort of a workaround.  In Squeezecenter's settings, designate one drive/directory as the Music Folder.  This is the directory Squeezecenter looks for your music.  In order to access music on other drives (or in other directories on the same drive that are not a subdirectory of the main Music Folder dir), create shortcuts to those other drives in the Music Folder dir.

For example, I have music on two different drives.  The drive/directory structure looks like this:

H:\AUDIO
        \LIVE_A-Q
        \STUDIO
J:\AUDIO
        \LIVE_R-Z

I designate H:\AUDIO as my Music Folder.  This gives Squeezecenter and my playback devices access to the AUDIO and LIVE_A-Q dirs.  Then, within H:\AUDIO, I create a shortcut named "LIVE_R-Z" that points to J:\AUDIO\LIVE_R-Z.  Now, when I navigate to my Music Folder, I see both the directories and the shortcut:  LIVE_A-Q, LIVE_R-Z, STUDIO.  Selecting LIVE_R-Z from my Squeezebox or Boom simply follows the shortcut and opens the directory J:\AUDIO\LIVE_R-Z

You can also do this within windows using linkd.exe (available in the Windows resource kit, a free download).

Start with a directory (eg. c:\music) then use linkd to create softlinks to your other directories d:\music e:\music etc..  Point squeezecenter to this new directory and it shold seamlessly see the subdirectories.

little confused here.  how do I create the shortcuts?  in squeezebox server or windows?  I know how to create a basic shortcuts (rightclick > shortcuts or send to) but it's not letting me create one for a hardrive.  until I buy a 2 tb external I need to link 4 externals through my D:music folder.

I have that one set up and scanned but not sure how to do the workaround to add the other drives.

luckily my box isn't here yet but I'm setting everything up now so it'll be ready.

Sorry for the confusion.  Create shortcuts in Windows Explorer.  I don't have any trouble creating a new shortcut for HDDs:

  • Windows Explorer
  • Main menu File | New |Shortcut
  • At Type the location of the item prompt, specify <drive letter>:, e.g. F:
  • Rename the shortcuts to your liking
  • Move the shortcuts to your primary Squeezebox audio directory (D:\MUSIC).

got it today!  one quick question about the album layout on the remote.  I have the shows tagged by show not by set or disc

example

for dead 4/28/1971 I have the album as 04/28/1971 Fillmore East NYC

when I go to grateful dead and scroll the albums it has it split up by disc instead of the whole show/album listed as

04/28/1971 Fillmore East NYC

it's listed as

04/28/1971 Fillmore East NYC (disc 1 of 3)

so to play the whole show I have 3 albums!  if I go into music folder and scroll the drive to the show it's all together but the tags don't show, ie can't see the track names.  anyway around this short of renaming every track (not gonna happen)??  I've looked all over the settings and don't see anything.  tried all the different settings under Album sort method.

our tags show the album as "04/28/1971 Fillmore East NYC (disc 1 of 3)".    You need to fix the tags.  Pull the files up in foobar, highlight the whole section and then select "properties" and update the album section (it will fix all of the tags for the entire grouping at once).

no they don't!  I checked and know I didn't do it that way.  they are just tagged as 04/28/1971 Fillmore East NYC

not as disc one etc.  I did them all the way you just said with foobar.

I thought I figured it out.  when I used foobar's live show tagger it set the disc number under tags to 1,2,3 etc.  not album field but disc field.  so I got rid of that but that actually still didn't work!  they are no longer listed by disc 1 but there are still separate folders/albums.  one containing first set, one with second etc.

I just went into foobar on a show that I have the tracks named s1t01, s2t01 etc.  I deleted the disc number in foobars tags, I even renamed the track numbers in foobar tags so it's 1-20  instead of 1-10 & 1-10.  that still didn't work!  there is still a folder/album for each set.  but the disc one part is gone.  rescanned in squeeze server to update and still the same.

still didn't work  >:(  the disc 1 part is gone but still a separate folder/album for each set/disc

edit:
ok if anyone cares ;)  just a rescan was not enough. I had to delete the whole library and rescan from scratch.
