CA-14, 9100 preamp and Zoom H4N
« on: April 14, 2011, 09:24:17 PM »
Hello All,
New to the board here and have really found all of your info very helpful!  However I have a question I was hoping someone might be able to help me with...

I am new to recording and just received my CA-14 (cards), 9100 preamp and have a Zoom H4N.  Obviously the Zoom H4N does not have a Line-In (angers me) and only has a EXT MIC in.  From what I have heard the "line-in" is through 1/4 input (is that correct that I could go TRS to 1/4 via the 9100 preamp into Zoom H4N)?  I know from what everyone has told me to use line-in so the fact that it doesn't have a TRS line-in connection worries me not only from a convenience standpoint but also a sound quality standpoint.

My question is...what are my best options using a Zoom H4N and my CA-14/9100 setup to make this as clean as possible?..maybe some Zoom H4n users could recommend some ideas with my setup.  Thanks again for any information you guys are all very helpful!

You said it yourself, it does have line-in, it's just not a stereo TRS 1/8" like on many of these types of recorders. Looking at the manual (I've never seen one of these in person), it appears to me all you need is an adapter cable - male 1/8" TRS to dual mono male 1/4". Like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMP153-Stereo-8In-Mono/dp/B0002CZZ0G

The 1/8" plugs into the output of the Church 9100 and the 1/4" plug into the the two jacks on the bottom of the Zoom, one is left, one is right. And then there will be some sort of line-in mode that sets the recorder to those 1/4" line inputs.
DPA4061 HEB -> R-09 / AT943 -> CA-UGLY -> R-09
AKG CK63 -> nBob actives -> Baby NBox -> R-09/DR2d
AKG CK63 -> AKG C460B -> Zoom F8/DR-680MKII
Line Audio CM4/Superlux S502/Samson C02/iSK Little Gem/Sennheiser E609/Shure SM57 -> Zoom F8/DR-680MKII (multitracked band recordings)

Thanks Jeff....got the cable...can't seem to find the mode to switch this nothing is picking up....hopefully someone knows after trs to 1/4 inch what mode the zoom would need to be in and set to so I can bypass the internal preamp....

The line in is an analog input, so there is no way to bypass the internal preamp. You can use it as a digital input recorder, but that is only through the USB port. (stereo only) Be aware that the line in on this unit is sensitive, so you will most likely need to a.) reduce the gain on the 9100, or b.) get an inline 10dB attenuator. I suggest option( b.)  M-audio sells one with 1/8" ins/outs for around $20 I thiink.

Thanks all again I really appreciate your help.  I guess I wasn't anticipating that as the older Zoom models seem to have an easy trs line-in fix to bypass preamp it seems...
