MKH 8030 when ?
« on: May 08, 2011, 01:50:30 PM »
Any word on the street if this mic is ever going to happen ? it's been rumored since 2008.

With the release of the MKH 8060 and 8070 shotguns, the figure-8 mic is the only one missing from the family.

With the release of the MKH 8060 and 8070 shotguns, the figure-8 mic is the only one missing from the family.

Actually, the 8030 is not the only missing head.  The sub-cardioid (wide cardioid) is also missing - and there really really need a diffuse-field omni (or a screw-on diffuse-field module) for the system.

I have been banging on at Sennheiser since the system came out that an 8030 fig-8 head was needed.

All I can suggest is that anyone who wants an 8030 should send an e-mail (or letter, or whatever) to Sennheiser.  Either send it to your local Sennheiser main agent and ask that it be forwarded to the Product Manager in Germany or write to Germany direct.

If anyone sends me a PM I will send it on as I do know the Product Manager.

The 8030 is planned for the system - I managed to get this confirmation a year ago, but I don't know of any date yet.

The more people ask for it, the sooner it is likely to come.

Also - make sure you ask Sennheiser every time you see them at a trade show (EG: AES in London at the end of this week) that you want an 8030 and ask when it's coming.  ;)

In the meantime - the Neumann KK 120 with the KM-A or KM-D is the same colour and I know several people who have gone down this route.

Also Ambient in Germany have bought out a small fig-8 and a special cable that would go with the MKH 8000 series very well I think.

I hope this helps.

PS - I have copy/pasted your post into an e-mail to the Product Manager in Germany

John, thanks for keeping the pressure on Sennheiser.
I'm sure a 8030 would be a hit for them and increase the number of the other 8000 series mics sold as mid-side sets.

I'm already using a MKH30/40 pair, but would like to add a 8050 and 8030 set with MZL8003 cables  for street recording - because the blimp would be a third the length of the 30/40 blimp.

Agreed, but the missing figure-8 is the biggest hole in their system.

I'll send them an email and tell them I'll definitely buy the 8030 when it comes out.

So does MBHO make a figure-8 cap?  I don't see it on their web site.

The MBHO fig-8 is the KA 800 - you can see it on THIS PAGE if you scroll down.

They also make a fig-8 as an OEM product for Ambient - It's very new and I saw it in Frankfurt last month.  It's very small (IE: short), so the ambient one should be the perfect partner for the MKH 8000 series.  Ambient also do a clip for it (they had it clipped to a Schoeps CMIT at the show) - it's on the B&H website HERE.

Ahh - it's also on the Ambient site HERE.

Compact. No mic body amplifier required. Interesting..

I wonder how it sounds.

The B&H and Ambient sites list a frequency response of 200Hz - 16kHz for the ATE 208. The MBHO links show either 40-16k or 40-18k response depending on preamp used.

But the diagrams of the MBHO and Ambient look pretty much identical.   ;)

Yeah, I did notice the polar plots looked very similar. Guess it depends how important it is to you where the roll-off begins.  ;)

As for me, I'm still waiting for the Naiant U-8S.

And if you want a small, high quality, fig-8 SDC, there's always the Schoeps CCM8:

I'd like to see a stereo version of it.  I have a pair of MKH30's, and they are a pain to use in Blumlein, especially M/S as opposed to XY.

I've been tempted to sell them and get something like a Royer SF12, but the fragility issue for live use...

If there was a stereo MKH30 or 8030, count me in.

I got my sf 12 retrofitted with live ribbons which are slightly thicker and more sturdy. It still sounds great.
