matching preamps to KM184s
« on: January 30, 2012, 07:15:14 PM »
in the studio, my favorite preamps for km184s is the vintech 1272 (a neve clone), which is a very thick and warm preamp - rolls off the top nicely, and gives a slight low-mid boost, a very effective combination for 184s.

the 1272, however, does not easily lend itself to remote work.  i have tended to just use the preamps in my fast track ultra>T410 thinkpad i7.

are there any transformer-based portable preamps available?  what do youse guys tend to match with your km184s/km140s to smooth them out?

thanks.

I bet you would like the Areco MP2 preamp with those km184's. Its a small transformer based preamp.  I always liked my friends 184 > sound device mp2 recordings and it's a transformer based pre as well.

I think there is an aerco in the yard right now.  That doesn't happen very often.

If you like a Neve clone why not just get a Portico 5012?

that was going to be my suggestion

the aerco is sold - would have been a good choice.
the portico is a little less portable than i was after - i was hoping someting like the sonosax or SD usbpre, but i havent heard either of those with 184s.  i really want something other than super clean preamps (for example, i really did not like the grace preamps i tried with the 184s).

big props to the Aerco MP-2.  it's built like a tank, it's rock solid in the field (mine has never failed me) and Jerry has the best customer service!!!

i feel your 184 pain. had a pair for 8 years or so and it was always a pain getting the right sound. through tubes, transformers and 2 inch tape they sounded good. but it was an awful lot of effort and money.

what are you going to be recording remote with them?

i suggest either keeping them home at the studio if you like them or sell them. don't let the high frequency pain dictate that you spend a lot on a preamp.

better off with the right mics and then dealing with the preamp.  with the right mics the preamp becomes much less important or a non-issue. or get a real pair of 84's??? which is really the sound i presumptuously think you want if you like the 1272 and the 184.

if you are open to omnis, check out the little blondie mics,  very nice and warm, they add a thick quality to the sound without  transformers and  great price point.

thanks cash - i'll contact uncle

wero - i really love 184s and 140s.  i have also owned pairs of schoeps cmc64s and DPA 4011s, as well as several pairs of C481s and C461s, gefell m300s, etc.  also many omnis, currently using a pair of DPA 4091s which i also love.  while i liked the schoeps, dpa's, and the akg's, there is just something about the way the neumanns sound that sets them apart in my experience.  if they still made new 84s, i would probably get some, but finding a clean matched pair of old 84s is relaly hard unless you want to pay WAY too much money.
