Soundboard Patch Tool Kit?
« on: January 23, 2015, 02:14:20 PM »
I just picked up a DR-70D, so I want to put together a basic tool kit to allow me to take a soundboard patch for aud+sbd mixes.  It's been probably 15 yrs since I've patched from a board, so I don't really know what I need.  I have a 20' pair of XLR>XLR, but beyond that?  My inquiry includes any handy connector converters/adaptors.  Thanks!

Naiant Tinybox v2.2 / NBox(P) / Apogee Mini-MP / Church Audio ST9200 / CA-UGLY
Sony PCM-M10 / Tascam DR-70D

Craig,
I would go with:

XLR > XLR
XLR > RCA

Most boards have RCA and XLR feeds...
Mics: Schoeps MK4's | Schoeps MK41's | Schoeps Mk21's
Pre-Amps: Schoeps VMS02ib | Nbox Platinum KCY
Cables: KCY 250/5 Ig (2)
Recorders: Sony M10  | Tascam 70D l Edirol R-44

Add in a couple 1/4" > RCA adapters to the above and you'll be able to do almost anything that's likely to come up.

There's a board patch sticky thread in the cables section I think. Does a good job summing it up.

15ft XLR cables

RCA(m)>XLR(f) adapter
1/4" (m)>XLR(f) adapter

If your deck doesn't have a sufficiently low line-level input, you'll need 2x XLR attenuators, which can be built into those adapter cables or added separately. If you're using the 70D's analog mini plug input (I don't know that deck that well) then you'll need a stereo mini plug (m)>2xXLR(f) adapter with attenuators built in. Mine are Naiant w/ -20dB attenuators, which I use with the R-26

You can buy all of that stuff from Ted Gakidis, Darktrain, or Naiant I believe. Naiant may be the only one who does attenuators (not sure).

I bought a pair of XLR splitters (Y cables) for those occasions when there's only one board pair out and two tapers.  ;D

I usually carry a Henry Engineering Patchbox II. http://www.bswusa.com/Matching-Amplifiers-Henry-Engineering-Patchbox-II-P2593.aspx?gclid=CjwKEAiAo8emBRCX_OqU4qek6y8SJACzgf8faZk2sj2CzZQZj0OXXypbphj3OjofpYRDSJippy43WBoCMSPw_wcB
Not only does that make other tapers happy, the sound men love it because it means they only have to deal with one taper and only have to set up one matrix. I recently bought a first version of the Patchbox off eBay for about $50 and the only difference I can see is that it is bigger size-wise. The specs and the number of connections is the same. I saw another of the first version on eBay this week but only put in the basic bid and somebody sniped me at the last minute, which was fine by me but it was the same seller so maybe he has more to sell.

I bought a Henry Engineering Patchbox I (original) recently.  Besides being bigger than the II, the II also has 1 extra pair of TRA outs.  Great thing to have around for SBD patches.  All you need is a XLR > TRS cables or TRS > TRS cables from the SBD and you're golden.  Output is XLR, TRS, or RCA.  Too easy.  I'm running mine next week at a festie.  Can't wait.

For years I have had a second pair of xlrs plugged into inputs 3/4 of my r44. I have the splinter so I can double the mono signal, or share sbd out with someone else... Also have the rca>xlr adapter in case I need to accept a rca sbd patch. And of course, I carry the trs to xlr adapters...

And I thought I was prepared...

Now venues are only inferring digital aes outs, and I don't know what to do...

I learned it is good to have an USB stick available....since the newer boards are able to record to the USB stick and I was told twice sorry USB or nothing...If I recall it correct formatted to FAT 32
