Upgrade from CA14/CA11-2 up to ~ 500$
« on: May 26, 2018, 04:05:41 AM »
Hi,

I would like to upgrade from my Church Audio CA11 Vs or CA14 mics.
Should be stealth rig and cards.

I like alot this post:
Sounds good... do you have any impression of the quality of the input? compared to the M-10, for example...

sample (part of the wav i did a screen cap above)
https://soundcloud.com/edtyre/dana-fuchs-band-2018-05-24-sellersville-theater

Ok his rig is: schoeps mk-6 >actives > nbox platinum which seems to be way too much $$$ for me ;)

So i t think all the CMC(=AT) Mics should be my candidates, right?
https://www.soundprofessionals.com//cgi-bin/gold/category/120/mics

So what are really the differences with the mics > 199€.

PART#: SP-CMC-2 - Audio Technica - Deluxe Audio Technica Cardioid Stereo Microphones. Includes windscreens and clips - Item #B-14802
Retail: $249.95    Your Price: $169.95  You Save: 32.01%

PART#: SP-CMC-4U - Audio Technica - Premium Audio Technica Cardioid Stereo Microphones - Includes one pair of rotating clips and standard windscreens - Item #C11-12600
Retail: $329.00    Your Price: $199.00

PART#: SP-CMC-8 - Sound Professionals/Audio Technica - Premium Audio Technica Cardioid Slimline Stereo Microphones - clips and windscreens are included - uses ES943/933 capsules - Item #B-12601
Retail: $499.95    Your Price: $399.95

Maybe someone can help :O)

AH and what means the "U" at the end of the model -> SP-CMC-4"U"?

What else do I need? The low sens Mod? I record not THAT loud show, but moderately loud Pop Concerts.
If still have a batterybox (non amplified from Church) and Olympus LS12 Recorder.

I recommend listening to as many recordings as you can that used the AT853 cards, AT933 cards, and Church cards.  Only you can know what sounds best for you.  Different people will have different opinions about preferences, all of which are equally valid but none of which will answer the question of what sounds best to you.  There should be plenty of examples you can listen to using each mic on Live Music Archive.

FWIW I have the AT853 cards and like them a lot, but I'm also not going to say they're perfect.
Mics: Core Sound TetraMic | AT4031s | AT AE5100s | AT853s (C/SC) | Line Audio CM3s | DPA 4061s | CA-14 omnis | Studio Projects CS5
Pre: CA9200
Decks: Zoom F8 | Roland R-05 | Tascam DR-2d

I have both the AT-853/SP-CMC-4U cards and the CA-14 cards, and while there are some slight differences (CAs have a bit more body, ATs are a bit brighter), I'd say they're not significant enough to call one an upgrade over the other.

Having gone through this same analysis myself, I'd honestly recommend sticking with what you have until you can afford Schoeps or something similar. (Which are out of my price range as well, but are undeniably a step up from the Church mics.) Church and ATs are both excellent mid-price mics.

I also question whether AT853s would be a huge improvement.
Schoeps CMC6 (MK22's, MK41's) / AKG C480B (ck61, ck63, ck8) / Telefunken M60 (TK61, TK63) - for sale / DPA (4061)

To be completely honest, none of those options are really an upgrade. I prefer my CA-11s to my 853s by a pretty significant margin. Obviously it's subjective, but I wouldn't just assume because they cost more they're an upgrade.
Mics: Berliner CM-33, CA-14 card, CA-11 card & omni, AT-853, Sony ECM-907

Maybe keep an eye out for some akg ck61’s and actives. Might be able to pull that together for around 5-6 hundred. Significant upgrade from whats listed above.

I was going to suggest AKG actives might be the next level up but would't the cost be more like $800 - $500 for the actives and $300 for the capsules...

Depends if you can find a used pair. Ive bought and seen pairs for around 3 in YS, granted you get what you pay for. Caps can be found for around 3 as well i think.

CK 61’s > nbob actives > nbox + > r- 07
1000-1200 can get it all done, and now you
have a big step up (IMHO of course)
Your gear can make a very good recording, i would
only step up to this, not make a sideways move as others have said.

I agree that a move to another pair of cheap small cards, no offense, would be lateral. If you want to go real small but tske a big step forward I'd go mk4 mk41 caps or the vertical models>Nbob cable>Naiant IPA>used m10. 2200 or so and there's  good Euro option to purchase caps that will save a few hundred. I love my nbox but personally, it's too big for 😈. IPA is much smaller and sounds good. I personally can't recommend a small deck other than the m10. Easy find. It has quality line and mic inputs forever battery life and a dial instead of stepped level switch.
😈 Mk4v/41v>nbob actives>Baby nbox>Oade warm mod Marantz 620.

Open: 4v/41v>nbobs>nbox platinum>620

Great advice in general.

Keep the $500 and keep saving.  You can make some pretty good recordings with the Church mics. $500 mics will be a slight improvement...not worth dropping $500 for though.

Honestly the next step for you is going to cost $1000+. If you're going to upgrade you might as well see a significant difference in your recordings.

Many good options. My personal favorite are the Nevaton MCE400's...but good luck finding a set. They are fairly large, but they are my favorite small mics.

An easier option, and also idiot proof as far as security goes is going to be the DPA 4060/4061's > DPA d-Vice > Phone.  The plus is they sound fantastic and you can't get a smaller rig than that. Downside from my experience is they are VERY accurate so if the room doesn't sound that great neither will your recording (although I wouldn't worry about that too much). There just was a used set of 4060's in the YS (sold). They went for $650. Another $650 for the d-Vice and you won't ever want to upgrade again.

There are other options out there. My suggestion is to set a budget of over $1000 and start listening to recordings to see what you like.
