Iphone 7plus for recording?
« on: September 12, 2018, 04:35:23 PM »
I am buying Iphone 7plus and am thinking I might use this to record. have a few questions

1. What is the best app to use for recording audio/video? Something easy and dependable
2. Will I be able to use my Church mics. to record AND if so would I need battery box?

Would mostly use for video but if going some place where not convenient to bring in deck would want to be able to record audio

Thanks,
My old cell is really old and trying to find out what the 7plus can do

Good questions. There is not a lot of info on this, so I had to do some research on my own to find out stuff that "works".  As for recording apps, I use the Shure MOTIV the most. It's laid out nicely and you can adjust the recording levels.

I have also used the NCH RecordPad app and it's very nice as well (I just like the Shure more for some reason). You can adjust the levels via it as well ...

Lastly, I have used the VERY DETAILED and incredible PVD Field Recorder app (I think it's available for iPhone as well). It's not as simplified as the above two, but it's VERY impressive for a recording app ...

I hope this helps!!
Let me know if I can help anymore.

I went out and bought the Shure MV88 Microphone and so far I like it. Haven't recorded a show yet but seems to work fine so far. It wouldn't connect with my case so I bought an otter case on sale and cut away so mic fits. The only problem is I don't believe that you can use app with any other microphones (like my church CA-11's). I tried plugging mics and using that little adapter thing that came with the phone but program wouldn't recognize the mics. Am I doing something wrong?
If this won't work with outside microphones is there an app that is free or cheap and easy to use that would work  with my Iphone 7plus?

Thanks for any help

I have a question about the shure MV88.

here is a sample i recorded this weekend.
https://soundcloud.com/jeffreytopping/13-vanity

Getting results i have not had before.
Is this clipping of the bass because the "Limiter" was on? Or due to "Compression" being set to "light"?
The sound was very loud, like chest thumping loud, and it seems it was too much for the mic, but is it due to the settings i had at the time? (see above)
ive actually had my levels too high before and had redline distortion but not this kind of muting of the bass after every kick drum or bass thump.
Can anyone give me some advice on how to fix this in the future?

thanks

I am not sure if the lightning to 1/8" adapter works at all for audio input but using the headset port on an iphone requires using a TRRS adapter. The connector has a third ring which tells the iphone that it will be used for audio in. In addition, this is mono only. If the adapter works at all it most likely requires a TRRS cable too

The general solutions for recording audio to an iphone are

1. Headset port with TRRS cable, mono only
2. Record using the built in microphone
3. Use a lightning connected microphone like the Shure Zoom IQ5/IQ6/IQ7
4. Use a lightning connected A/D connector like he Sonicport or DPA D:Vice (with DPA microphones)
Schoeps CMC6 (MK22's, MK41's) / AKG C480B (ck61, ck63, ck8) / Telefunken M60 (TK61, TK63) - for sale / DPA (4061)
KCY 250/5 and 250/0 > naiant PFA or IPA or Nbox
Mixpre-10t / Mixpre-6 / Mixpre-3 /Sony M-10 / Roland R-07 /Tascam DR-100mkIII / d:vice

As for #4 this modded zoom iq6 is another option https://www.studiocare.com/soundman-modified-zoom-iq6-interface-for-iphone-mobile-and-ipad.html

I've used the Rode IXYL with a lightning extension cable in the past and got great results from it.
