Smallish handheld with digital input?
« on: March 28, 2019, 07:37:51 PM »
I know this is probably beat to death somewhere on here but my search skills suck. Looking for info on the small size to run out of a V3. Thanks.

I recall recent discussion here about the MKIII and the gain adjustment affecting the digital input level, unlike the MKI/MKII.  Perhaps someone can chime in to confirm that the 561 functions similar to the previous models.

At $250, it's hard to beat if it works.

The 661 mkiii has a weird quirk that the level control does control the digital input. Bought it for the same reason to run out of a V3 and sold it shortly after finding this out. The mkii works perfectly and are a bit smaller. The 561 only does 24/48 dig in which wouldnt bother me but just an fyi.

dimensionally, the Tascam DR100mkiii is smaller yet
the SPDIF input is on top and is a 3.5mm TS instead of RCA but I found these on ebay

You know I wish I had looked harder for that cable when I had the dr100mk3. It was the one thing that bugged me about it. The rechargeable lion battery life on the thing was great and never really had any issues with it.

Yes, I realize that and I appreciate your input. My Post should have read smalllish. Really don’t need something as tiny as the Microtrack, although I’m sure it would do the job.

The Microtrak works for me when it does. But nothing has been as reliable as the PMD661 & the R44 (larger, I know)
With the microtrack, if the signal fails, of comes unplugged, it just stops the recording. With the 661 it is better, but if you unplug you might lose something. The r44 treats the digital in almost like analog in that it can be unplugged or plugged back in without stopping the recording or damaging the file.

If I were going new, I'd try the PMD-561. Biggest issue solved when you get a tight cable that's the right length.

I have an extra MT2 kicking around if you want to try it.
