TSKB: Users who record to PC via Audition
« on: June 29, 2019, 12:29:05 PM »
I've got an opportunity to control the recording environment (somewhat) for a 5 piece jazz band in August.

I've got a couple M10 based  two channel rigs and the 6 channels into a DR680. I've worked with this situation before but the required post work to get things lined up etc. is something I'd like to avoid.

What would a person need to be able to capture tracks straight to the HD with only mics, cables, PC/Audition 3.0 in hand right now?

Not enough info, LMK.

TIA

Here's something I found that might help point you in the right direction:

It came from:  https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2509028

This might be a slightly better tutorial Multitrack Recording & Mixing Basics in Adobe Audition for the Mac - YouTube . It is by Jason Levine one of the Adobe Audition team experts. Although it shows settings for a Mac Windows will be very similar.

However how you record exactly depends on what the mixing board that you have access to can provide you with. If you want to record lots of tracks simultaneously then you need a mixer with a multichannel USB built in. Normally they only provide a basic stereo pair in and out.

Thanks. Anyone have any gear selections that are reasonable?

I used to use a Tascam US-1800, but I had some problems with dropouts when I tried to do too many tracks. Hard to say where the cutoff may have been, around 10 perhaps. Limitation of the USB? Limitation of my Laptop? I switched to DR-680mkII with an external A/D to get those two extra channels. Why is six channels of DR-680 not enough for 5 piece band?
DPA4061 HEB/AT943 -> CA-UGLY -> R-09
Samson C02/Superlux S502/iSK Little Gem -> DR-680MKII
AKG CK63 -> AKG C460B -> DR-680MKII
AKG CK63 -> nBob actives -> Baby NBox -> R-09/DR2d

I have the much smaller 2 channel version of the Focusrite Scarlett and it sounds good enough that I use it for my primary AD/DA interface.

 You could get 8 mic channels via USB in the 18i20 version - https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Scarlet18i20G2--focusrite-scarlett-18i20-usb-audio-interface

Another option is the Motu interfaces - they have a couple that are 8 channels or more over USB and they are very reasonably priced. The converters are probably better than the ones in the Focusrite devices (pure speculation) but they have less mic channels and more line inputs - https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/UltraLite4--motu-ultralite-mk4-usb-audio-interface?mrkgcl=28&mrkgadid=3286061366&rkg_id=0&campaigntype=paidsearch&campaign=aaText%20-%20Studio%20%26%20Recording%20-%20Audio%20Interfaces%20-%20&adgroup=Audio%20Interfaces%20-%20USB%20Audio%20Interfaces%20-%20MOTU%20-%20UltraLite4%20SKU&keyword=motu%20ultralite%20mk4&placement=google&adpos=1t1&creative=341750908923&device=c&matchtype=e&network=g&gclid=CjwKCAjwmNzoBRBOEiwAr2V27SJE5udhwiDbtNcve5k-Pz0BOfkDqlffd3lLr2kyhc84Ey5ZrxdqkxoCGkQQAvD_BwE

what's TSKB? TS Knowledge Base?

Will the mixing console have a firewire or USB-B output or record directly to a USB thumb drive?

^ Part of my problem is there is no mixing desk.

And I do have ample gear to capture the basic channels, I just wanted to eliminate having to align everything in post to clock drift etc. Nothing in my possession at this time allows me to "see" my mics in Audition.

I appreciate the comments as it gives me the picture I need to move forward.

+T

... and yes, to my knowledge TSKB is just as you stated.

Since you have a certain amount of freedom here, you can at least clap your hands or ask one of the stage performers to clap their hands (or hit a rimshot on the snare) loudly once as a "slate" near the start & end of the recording, to make it easier to sync sources.
