Don't know if this is the right area to post this but found an interesting read on how researchers where able to point lasers at smart speaker microphones to cause the speaker to think commands where being made.

Sort of the inverse of the cold-war era laser spy-tech microphone which pickup a conversation from afar via microscopic-level sonic excitation of window glass.

Yet another reason not to trust "smart speaker" Orwellian tech

Agreed on great reason not to have one. I don’t have an illusion of privacy today, but there’s no way I would have one of these in my home.

The irony is that Orwell thought that privacy would be taken away from us. What would he say now when he saw that we give our information away willingly!

You said it.  A student gave me an Echo Dot last Christmas and it's still in the package.  I have been wondering if it would launch out of a clay target thrower...
