shock mounts...what to get?
« on: April 14, 2003, 05:51:53 PM »
after getting my stand kicked around at the last show, i think i'm gonna get some shock mounts so my mics won't pick up the bumps as much.  what would everybody recommend?

of course the cheaper the price the better...but not something that is gonna fall apart after a few shows.

any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks,
Justin

Id go with the AT8410a mounts.

I was using the Sabra system up until last week and they worked Ok but they are pretty fragile.

I have now upgraded to the AT mounts with the Shure a27m vertical bar and now I have a very sturdy system that I am not worried about breaking and I can get my mics in different configurations with ease.

Going rate on these is about $50/ea, same as the Sabra-Som stuff.

Here are some of the cheapest ones I've ever seen, but you need mic clips to make them work.

Guitar Center also has some cheap half assed shockmounts that would be better than nothing.
Although I own Sabra-Som shockmounts I would recomend doing some research before buying these.  They have a warantee but break really easily if you don't take care of them (and sometimes even if you do).  For some they work well, for others they suck ass.  The Audio Technica mounts are considered by many to be the most rugged but are quite bulky.

I dig the Schoeps A20S mounts... but they're a bit pricey.

Refresh my memory, Justin - what mics are you using?

I've used both the AT 8410A and 8415.  I think they're both great.  They have the same attenuation specs, with the 8415s having a smaller form factor and accepting a broader range of mic diameters.

I haven't used my new-to-me A20S long enough to make a call, and they only accept very small range of mic diamter.

There's been a fair amount of grumbling here and on the Oade board about the Sabrasom shockmounts.

FWIW, I've played with the Sabrasom and Tensimount shockmounts.  I didn't find either to be especially robust (like the ATs), and I found them to be a bit of a pain in the ass to use.  But, I'm sure after doing it a few times I would've figured it out and/or gotten used to it.

Relatively speaking, I don't think any of the shockmounts we tapers commonly use are terribly expensive - most $40-$60/ea, well worth the minimal investment compared to what we spend on the rest of our gear.

Justin uses audix scx-1's, which he got for a song a might add!  They are about the same length and size as a km140, no active if that helps.  I would stay away from the sabra stuff, it is awful.  The at's are nice, as are the schoeps, although they are a lot of money!

I will second the AT emotion.  Definately the best shock mount I have used.  The A20s mount is nice for the size, but well overpriced.  I use them only because they work so well with the stcg bar, but if I always ran full bodies, AT is the way to fly...

Perhaps look into the mounts that Neumann specifically makes for the km100 series. If the Audix are about that size they would fit much better in the Neumann mount than the AT mount.

Sorry I don't have the part number handy but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

thanks for all the tips guys.  i'll look into all of those u guys suggested.  my mics are 21mm in dia. and roughly 4 1/8" (including caps) long if that makes a diff. for any of these shock mounts.

Thanks,
Justin
