I tend to agree with some other opinions that I have heard....let all the gear sluts get this thing first, then let some other manufacturers come out with their versions.  Last thing I want to be is a $2000 guinea pig.

I know what you mean, I did spend close to $1500 for a da-p1, but when I bought it, it was a proven pievce of high end gear....these prices suprise me coming from SD, but the features are nice.

Amen to that, Mike. I'll never sell my DA-P1! A real work horse. I've also got a PCM-M1 that i use to patch and clone with. I'll never sell it, either!!  Just something about trusting your recording to an inferior OS like Winblows on a laptop that I haven't warmed up to yet...  ;D

yes, dat is proven and works, but I am all for a good HD recorder, just not going to dump $4000 into one, or really even $2000 for that matter, would rather buy new cap for my schoeps.

once again, put your money into your mics. Say you have $4000 to blow on your rig, what is going to net you the biggest difference in sound, getting a HD recorder so you can do 24bit, or dumping that same money into mics and with $4000 you can get some bitchin mics.

While the unit might list for $2K, I doubt that any of our beloved retailers will sell it for that price.  I might be mistaken, but the DA-P1 lists for something around that.  It would take a pretty poor shopper to pay that price for one of those.  The same holds true for the D8, M1, and pretty much every DAT machine on the market.  The list price is always much higher in the Company Catalog than what they actually sell for.  I hope that we are pleasantly surprised by this box.  If nothing else, it is setting the stage for something else to follow...

long live the D.A.T.  ;D

IMO DAT is dead...  Transports aren't being made anymore, you best get to transferring all your masters to CD/DVD :)

I have been playing alot with 24 bit during the past month (to a lappy).  NO WAY IN HELL would I record 16/44.1 anymore, unless I don't have room to setup the lappy.  24/48 and especially 24/96 is absolutely mindblowing if you have a good 24 bit DAC for your home hifi.   And that's the biggest issue, really: finding a DAC for your home hifi that sounds great.  Not to mention having the gear to reproduce the extra bits of resolution down your signal chain.  But once you get past that, Money well spent.  And IMO money much better spent than on mics.   And if you don't have the hifi to hear the difference, archive at 24/96 and thank yourself later.

I'll put it this way: the upgrade from MD to DAT is *minor* compared with the upgrade from 16/44.1 to 24/96.  (provided you have the gear to hear it)

24 bit gets you so much ambience, air, and timbral beauty for the dollar...  I'd much rather run this thing than a lappy.  It took me 5 shows to get my laptop working 100% (no dropouts) with 24/48, then I had to tweak to get 24/96 working well.  I would hazard a guess this thing would be plug n play.

Not to mention this thing it should be more durable, have a better form factor, and be much less worrysome than having your $2k laptop sitting open for all to spill beer on...  And no tapes to buy!!  Add to that it includes mic preamps and a to d; if those are good quality, this is an all-in-one device.  Hook up the mics and go.

$2k seems like a bargain to me.  If I didn't just put together a laptop rig, I would buy one in a heartbeat.

Is this really true? This rumor started floating about a year or so ago but I thought that it had been discounted. Anyone know?

24 bit is great but I'm dragging a computer into the field with me and I'm not buying a first generation HD recorder.

Hmmn, I'll have to see if I can dig up that article I read on the web, Tim.  You never know ;)

Trust me when I say lugging a laptop in the field is 100% worth it for 24 bit recording...

Hi All,

At NAB 2001, Tascam told me that Alps, the transport manafacturer, was no longer producing the transports, but they (Tascam) had supplies for about two years.  When I spoke with Tascam again at AES, they were totally non-committal about anything going on regarding the future of portable recording products.

Sony may still have something going but based on the low demand of DAT machines lately, I can't imagine they'll continue building new machines for long.  Yes, this is speculation, but Sony has always managed to keep quiet about their design plans and seldom releases information about scheduled product discontinuations.

Off to NOLA.

Happy Recording Everybody,

Marc
