IMO DAT is dead...  Transports aren't being made anymore

Is this really true? This rumor started floating about a year or so ago but I thought that it had been discounted. Anyone know?

24 bit is great but I'm dragging a computer into the field with me and I'm not buying a first generation HD recorder.

Hmmn, I'll have to see if I can dig up that article I read on the web, Tim.  You never know ;)

Trust me when I say lugging a laptop in the field is 100% worth it for 24 bit recording...

Hi All,

At NAB 2001, Tascam told me that Alps, the transport manafacturer, was no longer producing the transports, but they (Tascam) had supplies for about two years.  When I spoke with Tascam again at AES, they were totally non-committal about anything going on regarding the future of portable recording products.

Sony may still have something going but based on the low demand of DAT machines lately, I can't imagine they'll continue building new machines for long.  Yes, this is speculation, but Sony has always managed to keep quiet about their design plans and seldom releases information about scheduled product discontinuations.

Off to NOLA.

Happy Recording Everybody,

Marc
