Which is better VBR or constant bitrate for MP3's?

Im puttin some stuff together for my mp3 collection. I was wondering which is better.

A 256/320kb/s vbr mp3 will be "better" (truer to the source) than a constant bitrate 256kb/s, but would likely lose some detal to a constant bitrate 320kb/s mp3.
