Interesting that the 480's are winning in this poll. It makes me wonder how many of the people voting have actually ever run (or even heard) the mod 460's. IMHO, the mod 460's blow away the 480's. There's no way I'd trade my mod 460's for a pair of 480's.

Ea if you have the money, tony merill at sp audio lab can modify your ck61 capsule down to 1 micron or less, last time i checked they were doing 0.4 micron on large diapragms!!
think about it , that's the thickness of the wavelength of a single cycle of near ultraviolet light, the smallest wavelength in the visible spectrum !!!

I don't get it.. are you are talking about making the diaphram ultra thin?  Does that improve sound?  How?

to answer that question, you need to understand  microphone design.but yes if you want you mics to be as most dimensional, detailed and fast, the thinner the better.for further question abot the mod try calling tony at

Interesting.. I understand that making the diaphram thinner makes it more sensitive (to noise vibration/wind too) since it takes less to make it move (or apply more voltage bias to get a better dv/dt) but the AKG caps are already made and work wonderfully...it's the preamp that they try to better.

What I don't understand (and I gather you don't either, not a slam) is how they reduce the thickness of the diaphram (which thickness is measured in microns and has nothing to do with wavelength).  IT is very expensive to have a diphram re-sputtered let alone stripped (if anyone does strip to re-sputter, which I guess they do for the old stuff).  Likewise the material that is sputtered has a thickness too (of which is the main contributor of the thickness...cause the sputter is just there for electrical purposes.
I wonder if they replace the cap all together?  very interesting....

superphatal...the modded 463...was it the capsule or the preamp that was modified?

they redo the capsule by substituting the diapragm.the spluttered gold is usually 0.1 micron.can't remember what the diaphragm was based on,but it's wise to call tony to get the lowdown.because i
don't remember!!

Ya that was what I was comming up w/ since it is a bitch to re-work a diaphram.  Hopefully these guys have their shit together (sounds like they do) since the mass of everything is considered to make the cap react as a system to the frequencies desired.

Keep in mind that, in genereal, when someone speaks of a "mod 460", they're refering to the Jim Williams/Audio Upgrades mod, not the capsule mod that Anders is talking about. Haven't had my caps moded nor heard of that particular mod. I can only speak for the Jim Williams mod. And what I can say for sure about it is that it blows the 480's out of the water. I can't see how anyone that's actually heard the mod 460's could say otherwise. Search the Oade board archives for much more info on this.

Preciate the input ;)  The cap mod sounds interesting but would be skeptical about someone messin with it.  Is there a link to his website (if he has one)?

jah, they do got their shit together.whitney houston, michael jackson, jackson browne, don henley, david lindley, van halen, the eagles + lots of others have had their mics done there. And yes they also were the first to build 3 micron diaphragms,20 years before recent manufactures  started using it.
if someone calls tony, let us know.my info is based from a couple of years ago,who knows what they are doing now.i also seem to remember that they had life time warranty for their capsules.
