Some AT933 questions
« on: October 06, 2005, 02:32:57 AM »
hi there!

i think i will go with the at933's in the near future before switching to extremly expensive hypers like schoeps and so on.....
heard some tapes made with 933s and like them pretty much!. maybe you know some other decent cards in this price region as an alternative ?. i mainly (stealth) tape loud rock shows....!

now i've got some questions:

1) most of the tapes i have heard were made with the mics connected to a "standard" battery box. has anyone of you tried a sonosax m2 or any other phantompowerunit to power these mics instead ?. would a sonosax improve the sound of the at933's more than a normal battery box ?

2) anyone of you know where to buy them ?

i'd be very thankfull for your help :)

take care

alex

Hi Alex,

Not being rude, but have you run a search on "AT933"? Plenty of info here.

Briefly:

These mics are discontinued (check ebay for deals though), and consist of:

ES943 body + adaptor + larger AT853 capsures (onmi, sub-card, card, hyper)

ES943s (AT943) are still available (see Sound Professionals CMC8 etc), but with smaller (AT943 capsules), and no adaptor.

Some people (myself included) prefer the sound of AT933 to AT943.

And yes, with bb they can easily overload at high spls, the solution is to phantom power, or to power them with 3-wire battery box.

Size mostly...sound wise there's apparently not much in it - I've not run a direct comparison between AT943 and AT853, but I thing leegeddy did...have a search for a thread a few months back.

Humbug...can you tell me more about the 3-wire battery box you mentioned?
I have the 943s, love them, but the battery box ain't cuttin' it.

If you're looking for the phantom powered 853's, look on eBay, Alpha Sound and Lighting, Full Compass.  Evil is selling the SP modded 853's I believe that terminate into 1/8, right?  For phantom, go with the AT853Rx.
