Earthworks Omnis

Anyone here run QTC-x's?  Apparently voltage is quite high at high SPL's, potentially overloading pre.

running neve portico and mytek adc, neither of which i'm sure can handle, say, QTC-50's -- even at unity gain.

please advise.

Someone on this board runs QTC-1s into a Deva IV. I don't know anyone who's used the "new" EW mics. I only recently noticed that they revamped their lineup.
Out of the game … for now?

Yep, I am the guy who runs these. The QTC-1 mics are HOT, and you're right, without knocking them down you're going to overload a pre-amp in a heartbeat if you are doing loud arena rock. But, the Pre-amps on the Deva handle these mics just fine as long as I run them at -15 to -20 dB. To put this in perspective, I have to run the SR-77's from -5 to -10 dB and soundboard feeds from 0 to -10 dB. All of this depends on the venue, and SPLs being produced. For softer acoustical things, I can sometimes get away from using the pads at all. FYI, all the padding is done from within the Deva, I can set attenuation from -20 to +30 dB from within a menu. Looking at the Neve specs, it looks like you don't have the option to pad that much with the unit, so you would have to use external attenuators to not overdrive the pre-amp.

I have been running the QTC-1 mics in my mix for about 3 to 4 years with either a Wendt X4 or DEVA IV, so they can be used and when used in conjunction with other mics, can really enhance the sound. Here are some sample files that show you what I'm talking about. These are from Old Settler's Music Festival this past April from the main stage. All mics were positioned at the soundboard area and all audio was done like this:

EW QTC1 (1 metre spread) > Deva IV (channels 1 & 2)
EW SR-77 (ORTF in the middle of the 1 metre bar) > Deva IV (channels 3 & 4)
Soundboard > Deva IV (channels 5 & 6)

I had to make these mp3 files because of their size. I hope these help people figure out what you can do with multiple mics, I know a lot of people question my sanity in running 4 mics.

Files are:

Earthworks SR-77s only (ORTF)

Earthworks QTC-1s only (1 metre spread)

Soundboard only

Earthworks mics only (both the QTC-1 and SR-77's mixed)
http://homepage.mac.com/wayneb/rc_mics_only.mp3

Both mics and board feed together (my final product)

Take Care,
Wayne
