Normalizing a show.
« on: January 05, 2006, 12:29:59 PM »
I just did a transfer of a recent show I went to. But I am having problems making the levels nice and well.. level. The levels were all over the place. there are some songs where its too quiet and other where its too loud. Is there something I can use in Cool Edit Pro (Adobe Audition) to make both channels level?

I have never used CEP, but im guessing there is a normalize function in it, just look around ;)

open the wav/set, highlight it all, and find the normalize function, normalize to near 0db and save the file, DONE

I'm not clear on the problem, exactly.  Is one of these close to the problem you describe:

  • you adjusted levels manually and frequently throughout the recording so some sections which were comparably loud to one another during the performance are now very different in loudness from one another
  • you ran with AGC engaged and the auto-levels resulted in screwy raising and lowering of levels as the loudness of the music changed
  • the levels overall are too low
  • you set the levels and left them alone, but the dynamic range of the performance resulted in some sections that are very quiet (b/c the band played quietly) and some sections that are UBER LOUD (b/c the band played loudly), and you want to reduce the dynamic range so you don't have to fiddle with the volume on your stereo - turning up the quiet parts, turning down the loud parts

I just want to get the levels to 0 db as close as possible. I tried the normalizing function and it goes into it and then it completes but nothing happens to the wave at all. ???

did you test for peaks? it already may be at 0db on the peaks

i wouldnt recomend normalizing at RMS(Average) anyway
