OKM//R upgarde to..... wich recommend?
« on: February 20, 2006, 10:18:16 PM »
Hello Board:
I think its time to upgarde my OKMII/R Mics
Current rig is OKMII/R>A3>M1
A friend recommended me Sound professionals cardioids
I usually tape rock/pop at closed venues: some large, some small,  sometimes loud rock
Must be stealth!
Would need MICS and battery box only
Price range aprox of the OKM's $300 moreless
Anny suggestions, brands besides sound professionals
Ed ::)

Suggest either of the rigs listed in my signature.

Sanjay has an offer right now in the yard sale for a 3-wire battery box for use with CMC4/8 (AT853 or AT943) mics. I suggest you look into this!

Also look at Sennheiser (microphone madness), and, if anyone actually runs it, we'd be able to evaluate Church Audio...

Cheers,

Alex

I'm not really sure whether ATs would be a substantial upgrade from your OKMs. Of course it depends on what it is you don't like about them, but if you feel comfortable with small omnis in general, then you might also consider DPA4061s. They can be had for 500 or less - not *that* much more than 300, and the sonic difference is quite impressive IMO.

I don't see AT as an upgrade in any way, go for the DPA. You'll be glad you did.

Its wrong to compare OKMs to the ATs.... since both are of different polar patterns...
OKMs are omnis and ATs are generally used with cardioid capusules..

Depending on emalvido needs... whether his upgrade includes a change in polar patterns...
If its a straight up omni upgrade, nothing beats the DPAs of course...or Sankens  ;)

Yikes!!
Getting confused  ???
I have read all over the posts that DPA4061´s would be ......"the MIC" regarding my situation.
I basically tape indoors, pop/rock, sometimes LOUD metal stuff.
With the OKM´s I DONT place them in my ears, I have placed them always in front of a baseball cap, to catch the sound directly from teh stacks and try to diminish the scraemers, clappers, shouters around me. since they are Omnidirectionals
Have got great results with the OKM´s
More comments?  :o

I'm thinking about upgrading from my OKM II too.

I was rather disappointed by the OKM since i was able to achieve better sounding records with some 2$ capsules I soldered to a wire with 3.5 mm plug.

I'd like to try the Knowles FG-3329 or for less sensitivity the FG-3742.
They both have omni pattern and a very flat response. The french research institute IRCAM uses Knowles FG mikes in preference over some 600$ sennheiser mini capsules they used before in HRTF measurement setups, which makes me curious about these tiny mikes. (2.5 mm in dia) I think the IRCAM, residing in the famous centre pompidou in Paris would certainly use DPAs IF they were better.
They mikes are around $20 each and need 1.5V power.

Sadly, digikey.com would take $60 for shipping alone, so I'm at the moment searching for a cheaper distributor for small quantities.
I could perhaps also buy a larger quantity and then put them into yard sale together with powering box and such, have to think about that.

The reason IRCAM uses these capsules instead of others might be due to the simple reason of application.
U can't really say mic X is better than mic Y. It depends on application. Maybe for the taping of rock concerts,
certain mics would be better than others. The nature of the venue matters too.
DPAs may not be better, if the acoustic of the arena is inherently bad... If done well, the DPAs produce
a stunning capture, and if not, the result can go horribly wrong.

Not saying these Knowles capsules are inappropriate... but U might want to consider a host of other
factors too.

Sonic Studios Model DSM-6S/L and 6S/EL are excellent upgrade from OKM/R. www.sonicstudios.com/dsm.htm

Powering and connection to different models of decks is from passive powering adapters with and without bass filters: www.sonicstudios.com/pa_x.htm

Or with external preamplifiers specially designed to power DSM mic and provide line level output: www.sonicstudios.com/access.htm#micamp

Sample recordings at: www.sonicstudios.com/mp3.htm

Sonics are not really an excellent upgrade to the OKMs... Its more or less the same...
and with that price increase, might as well go with the DPAs?
