Sketchy V3 Power Cable
« on: January 13, 2007, 03:39:40 PM »
I am borrowing a friend's V3, to decide if I am going to buy one to go with my new R-4 Pro.  The power cable connection on the back seems to be for shit.  It is running off a Wally battery, and has a cable with both ends well connected, but the end that screws in on the V3 really had to be wiggled until it was in the right place, and then I was somewhat paranoid all night about whether any jiggle was going to cut the power.  Is this common, unusual, this unit only?

Thank you for the info, looking at it now. +T

Edit:  I spread them gently open (is this beginning to sound like a cheesy romance novel) with a mini screwdriver, and the connection now seems solid.  One less worry.  Thanks again.

I'm having the same problem w/ my V3 for the same reason - the hot pin is squished together making for a flaky connection.   Will have to try the suggested solution.

What a great site!   :)

The tiny piece of rubber really is key, I think..  It was pretty surprising to have such a solid looking power connector screwed tight still flake out when flexed..

when i had my v3, it NEVER left my rack-mount I made. and this is one of the resons why :)

I will never forget moedown 2004, RIGHT when moe came out on nite 2 or 3, Jon Merin's v3 power cable was flakin on him right then and I went up in about 10 seconds and pulled the pins apart a hair and hooked him back up and he got the whole set. he was amazed i knew exactly what to do. i was also amazed i fixed it that quickly

i'm lovin the v2's power cable tho. I have a custom leegeddy rt angle 4-pin>3-amp fuse>3x taimoy rc connectors so i can power the v2 via 7.2v nimh rc batts. very easy and efficient

The solution to put a small piece of rubber between the split pin works like a charm!
I used a tiny flattened piece of small diameter shrunk heat shrink tube and it settled in there nicely.

I also built a "rack" to hold the V3 such that the rack it's attached is about 3" deeper; ie rack is about 9" long compared to the approx 6" depth of the v3 so that when resting vertically, there's no stress on the power cable or anything else in the back for that matter.  Kind of difficult to describe, but it was made from 2 storage racks from Staples, a torch for bending metal, bolt cutters, snips, cables ties and, of course, shrink tubing.

With both improvements, the power plug will now remain securely attached.

Wow...that's great and useful NFO!  Had to replace my power cable thinking it was bad.  Gonna dig it out of the closet and fix it!

Thanks all...

The first line of the V3 FAQ needs to be "always use the rubber...."

That might get confused with this African TV ad....
