Memory cards for the Zoom H4
« on: January 27, 2007, 11:45:34 PM »
Being new to the world of digital recorders and SD cards I have an innocent newbie question:  What is the recommended card from the Zoom H4 in terms of the 2GB cards?  Is there a preferred/trusted brand among those who have more experience with this than I?

Thanks for any advice!

I'm happy with a Transcend 4GB.  As people here have reported, a 4GB card works with H4.
If a file exceeds 2GB, the header is screwed up due to the firmware not supporting 4GB card,
so you need a little tweak with your PC, but as long as each file is less than 2GB, you can
record up to the full 4GB without any tweak.  As people here suggested, you should only
format a 4GB card with your PC, not with H4, with the same reason.

I have not confirmed this on the first hand, but I'm guessing that H4 can read a Transcend 8GB (SDHC)
card because H4 is compatible with FAT32.  The problem with a Transcend 4GB (a file larger than 2GB
causes its header to collapse) is due to the fact that a SD card uses FAT16, which requires unorthodox
method to format 4GB.  (therefore the binary data needs to be tweaked for a file larger than 2GB)
A new generation (SDHC) card uses FAT32, so my guess is that H4 recognizes it.
Has anyone tried it yet?

Yes, I tried a Panasonic 4GB SDHC.  It didn't work, wasn't recognized by the H4 at all.
