new recorder for concert/festival recording
« on: April 26, 2007, 01:49:45 PM »
hello everybody,

after i spend some time reading this great forum, i would like to get some advise from the experienced tapers here ;)

what i want:
i want to record mainly hiphop/rnb/rock/pop/etc.. concerts/festivals. because i often get good checked by the security guards before passing, i need some stealth equipment, the smaller the better!

what i have tried:
i own a sony md recorder mz-r30 and a sony plugin-powered stereo mic ecm-719. i recorded some concerts on a festival with that and i was pretty satisfied with the quality.

what i am looking for:
a new recording device, my md recorder is too big.. i was very lucky to pass the guards with that huge machine.
the smaller the better; i am looking for another new md recorder or a harddisk/flashdisk based recorder.
on the md side, the mz-rh1 really impresses me; what i dislike is the fact that it isnt capable displaying track names.
for harddisk/flashdisked based players i didnt really find something..
i would also love to use my new recorder as mp3 playback device, so that i can sell my ipod nano and have two devices in one, so mp3 playback would be very nice..
if thats not really a good idea, i can use my nano for playback anyway, for sure.

i also dont know if it would be better to get a new mic? as i said, i was pretty satisfied with the quality i got, but better quality is appreciated ;)

my budget? well to tell the truth: im not becoming a professional taper. i would do those recordings maybe 5 times a year or so.. because of this i would like to keep it as cheap as possible, but if there are good reasons to spend more money, i would not say no.

thank you guys in advance for your recommendations,

infinite

If this is too big for you, I've got no advice for you. Sorry.

This may be a usable 16/44 recorder:  http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,82739.0.html

Check out the HiMD, some of those are small enough to fit into your wallet: http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,83488.0.html

This is my small rig. I have no trouble ever getting in anywhere with it. I do hope to upgrade the recorder soon.

After a while you stop thinking "how small can I get my stealth rig?" to "how big of a rig can I get in?".

I have the RH1 and am quite pleased with it.  It does show track titles on the remote.  Pluses: PCM recording up to 94 minutes per disc; uploads all Hi-MD's and MD's that are legacy so long as they have not been downloaded from another computer, and uploads digitally in 1/4 to 1/3 recorded time.  You can adjust your recording levels on the fly and it remembers them between discs and sessions.  All in all it is a sweet little package.  I have had no buyer's remorse in the months I have had it.  If you plan to record a lot, get the Macally IP-A481 LiIon battery pack for ~US$30.  It is half the price of a SONY LiIon gumstick and five times the power, will recharge from the SONY charger or from a USB port.  It is only slightly larger than the RH1 and should allow you to record ~20 discs on one charge.

I know that MD's, even Hi-MD's, are dissed on this board but I don't care.  The RH1 is small, light and does the job for me just fine.  You can spend 1/3 more and get something in the US$400 range.  I would rather save that money and put it towards the mics.  The RH1 will always be a good tool.

I did my best recording ever yesterday with my sony mz-rh1 + 9V battery box + Sennheiser MKE-2 omnis.
Was a small club in Vienna.
These mics blew me away when I checked my recording on my home stereo. Got a really fat bass-drum!
They are almost invisible!!!
http://www.microphonemadness.com/products/mmhlsomsenmi.htm

I recorded part 1 of the show as PCM(WAV) and part 2 of the show as HI-SP(ATRAC3 256kbit/s).
Tough I used omnidirectional mics I did not use a bassrolloff filter and it was the right decision! ;)
The 94min PCM limit is the only thing that avoids 10/10 points for the RH1 for taping ;) from my point of view.
I sold my Edirol R-09 cause it had some cons over the RH1 and the only pro was the 6h25min 16bit 44.1kHz recording time....not enough for me.
HI-SP sounds not BAD at all and IS accepted on DIME if its 1st generation.
The internal preamp is better than the edirol´s R-09...more noisy.

If you like HI-MD I would definitely go for a RH1 ;).

Also curious about the soundman DR-2 recorder...we´ll see in a few weeks.

I am taping acoustic music, so not too loud, with a very stealthy rig and I am very happy of the results.
my rig is as per the photo attached.

Schoeps MK4's ORTF, MK41 & MK8 M-S, DPA 4060's,
Schoeps KCY, Naiant Tinybox II, Self-Made Battery Box for DPA's
Sony PCM-M10, Tascam DR-2D, M-Audio Microtrack II

gorlando..
cut those dpas down and wire them right into the little custom jack interface you have there.  it will remove many potential points of failure.

my $.02.

I'll also throw in a recomendation for picking up a used iRiver h120.  all your bases covered.  tons of record time.  excellent sounding mp3 player.  size of a big cell phone / ipod.  easy to sneak in / out.
Also, the Zoom H2, with its build in mics might be better sounding than the Sony stereo mic you are using (i'm almost positive it would).

Mics are the most important thing.  Some Church-Audio cards would kick some ass for your, and be very stealthy.  I hear he has a new omni model that is pretty bad-ass.

As said before, if the R30 is too big, you can always consider to "simulate" it as your mp3 player. Everyone's got one, so It's not strange to carry it.

Anyway, I use to bring my Iriver IHP-120 with the earplugs "just as my mp3 player" and pre' and mics in the pockets.

Considering that last time I taped a show I broke into the venue with an UA-5, a Wall 9v Battery, AT943, DPA4061, Samson PM4, Iriver and NJB3 and few cables (interconnects and optical), I guess that SIZE DOES NOT MATTER, just your hability on hiding them!!  ;D
Actual Gear:

stealth  - AT943 (c,o,sc,h) > ST-9100 > Edirol R09HR/I-River IHP-116(CFMod)
Ultrastealth  - DPA 4061 > ST-9100 > Edirol R09HR/I-River IHP-116(CFMod)
Open - BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > Segue Dogstars > Marantz PMD671 busman t-mod

Playback: PC > M-Audio Fast Track Pro > KRK RP6 actives

i think it also depends on WHAT a kind of concert you are listening to..
[edit] *crap* [/edit]
again, thanks for your recommendations, i think my choice will be the rh1.. but i will have a closer look at the iriver.
mics which look like headphones is very nice, more stealthier is not possible, i think.
