thanks for that recommendation but I can't find any info on it either on google or here on TS... do you know anywhere where I could learn more about it and find out where to buy one?

This might be another option...get an R1 (24bit flash recorder). I have seen several for sale here dirt cheap and they have an excellent a/d. The cost of the recorder and CF card would be about the same as an sbm-1. I believe someone here on the board has an oade mod version for around $300. Just a thought.

This may be a silly question, but what is this oade mod everyone keeps mentioning?  Also, what is it about the R1 and R09 that makes them fair replacements for an a/d?  Finally, is the Korg MR1 another solid replacement for an a/d?  If so, which of these three units is the best?

The Oade mod is a upgrade to the line-input circuitry of the Sony SBM-1.  It really improves the sound of an already fantastic ADC.  The oade line mod on the SBM-1 is a "warm" flavored modification.  It really helps fatten up the sound of electret microphones IMO...    FYI, electret mics are the type of mic you are using (church, at, csb....)

  Also, what is it about the R1 and R09 that makes them fair replacements for an a/d?  Finally, is the Korg MR1 another solid replacement for an a/d?  If so, which of these three units is the best?

any of the three you just mentioned to 24 bit recording and 16 bit recording

r09= up to 24 bit 48kHz
r01= up to 24 bit 44.1kHz
korg= up to 24 bit 192kHz(i think)

all three of these units also record to flash media.  the r01 and r09 would immediately fit into your current rig nicely.  to use the korg piece you will need to fashion cables terminating to 1/4 inch male.  all are great choices and will give you years of pleasure.  the sbm is limited to 16 bit.  the oade mod units sound fantastic however, you will be unable to record at 24 bit AND you have an extra piece of gear.

Just a couple of corrections - the Korg has a 20 GB HDD, it doesn't use CF cards. Also, the Korg has dual 1/8" inputs, not 1/4".

So if I just replace my iRiver with the Korg, would the a/d problem be solved or would I still want another device?  Sorry if these questions seem silly, but if I am considering upgrading to a 24bit device, it wouldn't make sense to purchase an a/d which is limited to 16bit, right?  Judging by the spec's, the Korg definatly looks like it wins in the quality of recording department, is it's a/d somehow great or would I need to find some way of doing this oade mod to it?

I think you'd be pretty happy with the AD of the MR1. It's pretty expensive, especially compared to the iRiver but its input chain is a lot nicer, for example it has 2 power supplies to help isolate the disc startup noise.

The analog output chain of the MR1 is not as nice as the iRiver though. It's not really a fair comparison because it's not the intended use model of the MR1 vs the intended use for the iRiver, but I do use it to listen on the way home from the show and find the MR1 outputs to be lacking.

There's a mod sbm1 for sale in the yard sale right now I think. A very nice sounding, small, easy to stealth box.
